Meet Emily Alvarado

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emily Alvarado. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Emily, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
My resilience is something that I have gained through life experiences, and the people that have entered and left my life. When I was growing up, I didn’t have much support emotionally, and I was often left to navigate the world on my own.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My business as a makeup artist and esthetician student has been a difficult, fun, challenging, and rewarding journey. My art is something that I’ve spent years perfecting, and something that I hold close dear to my heart. The most exciting thing about being an artist is all of the creativity that can be unleashed, and all of the fellow connections you can make. My main goals as an 18 year old business owner is to expand my art, and once I receive my esthetician license, to open up those services and build my own studio. This journey has been far from easy, and I know I’m only beginning. The trials and tribulations never truly end, and there’s days where I wake up doubting myself and even my craft- but I always remain confident in my dreams. I used to be conflicted with what I wanted to do as an adult, and was just going to go the traditional route of going to college and figuring out my future. However, I knew deep down what my dream was- why settle for less? My dream is to create a brand, a business where people can feel beautiful inside and out, and where I can express myself in the fullest form, and work on creating even more services to help people treat themselves, and get that little amount of “me-time” in, one appointment at a time. I am so excited for the future expansion of my business, and to offer skincare, waxing, and makeup services to everyone and make every client of mine feel at home.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three main qualities that were the most impactful in my journey include trust, resilience, and discipline. Trust is absolutely vital in someones journey, whether it be starting a business, starting a new job, or making new goals and plans for yourself. Trusting in yourself and trusting the process is critical. If you don’t trust yourself and your abilities, how can you make something flourish for yourself? Even when in doubt, trusting myself was one of the hardest but most rewarding things throughout my journey, and it still continues to play an important role today. Resilience is a quality that is easy to get taken down whenever things are going slow, or you feel doubt. Throughout my journey, my resilience has been tested, and there have been moments where my doubt consumes my thoughts, but I must overpower them for my dreams. Every day might be slow, or with no clients at your doorstep, but you must keep pushing. I believed and continue to believe in my dreams and my potential, so even though there’s moments where I had no clients, no bookings, and no interest in my art, I believed in my dreams, and my resilience pushed through and is one of the main reasons I continue to work hard and put myself out there, because I know there’s so many more opportunities and people who want to see my art. Investing and taking risks leads to more opportunities and success, and although it’s not easy- it’s very well worth it. Discipline is probably one of the hardest things to master when starting out in a journey, because often when things go slow or not as hoped, we usually throw in the towel, and not even try to put ourselves out there even more because we think, if nobody is interested, why bother? However, doing things like writing goals, practicing your craft in your free time, posting content, asking for models to display your work, will all give you a push towards different audiences.

I believe that everyone is capable of developing trust, resilience, and discipline, but improving on it and being consistent is the most difficult part. Improving on something is a process that requires taking step by step, day by day. Every day, I suggest writing down your goals for that day, whether it be just starting out your page and getting started, or practicing your craft, and even writing down and investing some new additions to your business. No matter how small or big, these improvements will help out your business in the long run, and will be worth every moment. The biggest obstacle that can block your dreams is yourself, so self-improvement is a huge factor in making sure your business thrives. Therefore, making small goals for yourself is also going to benefit your business.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
For the past two years, I’ve been keeping a journal where I write down all my upcoming goals, my new events coming up, as well as moments when I feel overwhelmed. I also have a section of my journal where I write “where I want to be and why”, and this particular section is where I look back at whenever I feel overwhelmed. It reminds me of where I want to be, and the goals that I have in mind. I write down all of my thoughts detail after detail, and then once I close that journal, I feel like a weight is lifted. I also tend to take a day to just relax and treat myself, whether it be buying myself an iced coffee, or walking around the mall just spending time with myself or a friend, that day gives me time for myself and to protect my mind and my thoughts. One thing to remember when you’re feeling overwhelmed, is that it’s normal to take that rest day, or to take a couple hours to yourself, and that it won’t limit your success, it won’t slow down your potential, and it doesn’t make you “lazy” or “unmotivated”. In order to make your journey a successful one, you must make sure your mental health is preserved.
