James, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I draw my resilience from the formidable challenges I faced at a young age. Being diagnosed with Kawasaki’s disease, a life-threatening condition, at just 4 years old, compelled me to confront the fragility of life. Through that harrowing battle for survival, I discovered an inner strength that continues to sustain me. Moreover, my resilience is deeply rooted in my unwavering trust in God, who provided solace and guidance during the darkest moments of my journey. It is this amalgamation of personal fortitude and faith that fuels my resilience and serves as a testament to the indomitable human spirit.

I wanted to share a bit about what keeps me busy. Firstly, I own a car detailing business where we take pride in our meticulous attention to detail. Our services go beyond the basics; we offer a comprehensive range, ensuring your car receives top-notch care. What sets us apart is not just our commitment to excellence but also the unwavering support and engagement we provide to our clients.
In addition to running the detailing business, I wear another hat as a superintendent and construction manager for GC Legacy Construction, the leading builder of Starbucks in Texas. It’s an exciting role that keeps me deeply involved in the dynamic world of construction, contributing to the growth of a prominent brand.
On the personal front, I find immense joy in coaching my kids in football and basketball. Beyond the game, I see sports as a platform for teaching valuable life lessons. It’s a fulfilling journey, both professionally and personally, and I’m grateful for the diverse experiences that shape my days.
My vision for J Squared Contracting is one filled with growth and positive impact. I am determined to expand our small business to not only enhance the lives of our current employees but also to create job opportunities for others. My goal is to establish a presence all over Texas and eventually extend our reach beyond state borders. By bringing our detailing perfection to vehicles throughout the US, I aim to set a new standard in the industry. Through this expansion, I aspire not only to achieve business success but also to contribute to the broader community by providing exceptional services and fostering a thriving work environment for our team.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
In my journey as an employee, manager, and business owner, three key qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge have been instrumental. Firstly, my natural leadership qualities have consistently shaped my roles. Whether as an employee contributing to a team, a manager guiding others, or a business owner setting the course, my ability to lead with vision and inspire has been central to my success.
Secondly, strategic decision-making has been a cornerstone skill. As a manager, navigating complexities and making informed choices propelled my career. Now, as a business owner, this skill guides me in charting a path for sustained growth and success.
Lastly, a deep understanding of the industry has been fundamental. From cultivating expertise as an employee to refining industry insight as a manager, and now leveraging that knowledge as a business owner to innovate and stay ahead, my industry proficiency is a crucial factor in my professional journey. Together, these qualities, skills, and knowledge form the foundation of my multifaceted success story.
