We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Yi Cai. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Yi below.
Yi, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
For me, one approach is to engage in conversations with people. Back when I was in college, whenever I couldn’t come up with ideas for photography, I would call my grandfather. He was an interesting old man, and each time we talked, he would offer me some novel thoughts. He also had a unique way of looking at my art, making it all very intriguing for me.
Another method I use is exploring places through Google Maps, searching for places I’ve never been to. Once, I discovered the Noguchi Garden near my home. I spent an entire afternoon there, thinking a lot and taking many photos. Since then, it has become my favorite place, and whenever I feel puzzled or without direction, I go there to sit for a while.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a film photographer. I’m delighted to share my story. Due to my less-than-stellar memory, I prefer using photography to capture the people and things around me. Looking at these photos years later always evokes different emotions. Why do I persist with film? In reality, before this anecdote, I wasn’t particularly dedicated to shooting on film. However, in 2018, when my grandfather was still alive, he handed me a black-and-white film containing a photo of him and my grandmother. Aware of my pursuit of a photography degree, he inquired where he could develop this film into photos. At that moment, his eyes held both anticipation and an emotion I couldn’t quite articulate. That vintage photo possessed such charm; as I held it, I could sense its weight and narrative. Subsequently, I became immersed in film photography, previously oscillating between digital and film.
The rapid pace of modern technology sometimes overwhelms me as a young person. Every time I upgrade to a new iPhone, I lose a bit of old memories. Perhaps shooting on film is my last method to earnestly preserve past memories.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge stand out as particularly impactful. Firstly, adaptability has been crucial. In a rapidly evolving landscape, being open to change, new ideas, and emerging technologies has allowed me to navigate various challenges effectively. Flexibility in thinking and approach is key.
Secondly, continuous learning has played a significant role. Staying curious and updating skills regularly is vital in today’s dynamic world. Embracing a mindset of lifelong learning not only enhances one’s abilities but also fosters resilience in the face of constant change.
Thirdly, effective communication has proven to be a cornerstone. Whether conveying ideas, collaborating with others, or presenting to diverse audiences, the ability to communicate clearly and persuasively is invaluable. This extends beyond verbal communication to include writing and interpersonal skills.
For those early in their journey, my advice is to prioritize these three elements. Cultivate adaptability by embracing change and seeking opportunities to step out of your comfort zone. Foster a commitment to continuous learning by staying curious, exploring new subjects, and seeking out experiences that challenge and expand your skills. Finally, hone your communication skills through practice, seeking feedback, and actively listening to others.
Remember, a combination of adaptability, continuous learning, and effective communication can serve as a robust foundation for personal and professional growth.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
My thoughts often wander and are filled with various ideas. Concentrating my attention on a single topic is a challenge for me because I frequently deviate from the intended direction. Making myself focus is a challenging yet beneficial goal. This may require some practical strategies, such as setting clear goals, making plans, and finding methods to maintain focus.
