Meet Jeremy Macon

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jeremy Macon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Jeremy, so excited to have you with us today, particularly to get your insight on a topic that comes up constantly in the community – overcoming creativity blocks. Any thoughts you can share with us?
There have been plenty of times where I’ve experienced and overcame beat blocks. Most of the times I search for the inspiration to create. For example, finding samples, going digging for new sounds and attending beat showcases. I overcome beat blocks by attending shows, collaborating with fellow producers/artists.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m apart of a collective entitled The Genius Party, we put on monthly showcases featuring producers and artists. I’m one of the co founders of the collective. I’m a music producer, I use FL Studio, Serato Sample to create beats.

Within a year we’ve accomplished so much as a collective, ie working with the youth STEM events, featured in local newspaper’s and also the local news during the 50th anniversary of hip hop segment.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities of knowledge that have been the most impactful for me in this journey are becoming a student of your craft, staying focused, and accept criticism.

The advice I have for creatives in this journey is to stay focused and be consistent in your craft. In my opinion, a lot of the improvement comes from these two skills and I continue to use this every day.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
I’m a very reserved/introverted type of producer who’d rather be heard than seen. The biggest area of growth in the past 12 months has been the confidence in showcasing my beats live for people to hear. The Genius Party has helped me become more confident and allow myself to step out of my comfort zone to achieve this.
