Meet Alex Weinstein

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alex Weinstein . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alex below.

Hi Alex , thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.
I have been unable to beat “writers block” in any way that seems effective or pleasing. I have tried forcing my way through creative work by simply knuckling down and working automatically in hopes that a new path or concept would arise through the effort. I have also walked away from the work, hoping that inspiration would arrive on its own. Neither method has been a sure thing for me. I am fortunate to really be passionate about lots of creative pursuits though. That has been my method. When I can’t stand painting anymore, I move to sculpture. If sculpture and painting are drying up for me, I switch to furniture designing. I also play guitar in a band. I cook. I garden and I write. I produce a ton of stuff; all of it born of my creativity and so even though I am often feeling uninspired in certain disciplines, other activities yield authentic creative expression and I feel, overall, that I’m still moving myself along, growing.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am an LA-based artist originally from Providence Rhode Island. I make paintings and sculpture and am represented by Leslie Sacks Gallery (Santa Monica, CA). I also work with Heather Gaudio Fine Art (New Canaan, CT), Nancy Toomey Fine Art (San Francisco, CA), Wrong (Marfa, TX), Galerie DU COTE (Biarritz, France) and Jack Freeman Gallery (Sydney, Australia). I am a contributing writer the Surfers Journal magazine and am developing a series of short films for the magazine as well. I play guitar in Les Enfants, here in LA and we are just getting back into gigging after the pandemic shook us up.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
indulge curiosity. work through problems.
accept change along the way.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I surf. I go into the ocean burdened with complexity. It gets rinsed off. When I come back to land, I can breathe more deeply and reset my intentions. My advice would be, find a physical activity that captivates your focus and energy and allow yourself the time to get that exercise. Let the body and the mind do their thing without you trying so hard to control everything.
