Meet Ivana Gojkovic

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ivana Gojkovic a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Ivana, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
When I changed my perspective and stopped focusing on the negative aspects of life, situations, obstacles, or problems, I discovered the power of optimism. It is more challenging to be an optimist because it requires work and struggle to maintain such a mental state. It’s much easier to be a pessimist and give up on everything immediately, but that doesn’t contribute to anything. Optimism is like spring; it blooms and flourishes, even when seemingly still. My optimism comes from understanding that hard work, hope, and a bright outlook for the future lead to progress.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the author of the poetry book Hronike, published in 2019. It is my accomplishment, of which I am very proud. Finding an adequate publisher recognition of my work and talent was complex but strangely satisfying. The process changed how I look at people, relationships, and life and reminded me why it is essential to write it down. My poetry is of the kind that heals, ennobles, nurtures, empowers women and men, accepts all people as they are (with all their characteristics), encourages change and appreciation of who we are, and reminds people of their authenticity.
I am working on a new poetry book, hoping it will have an even better acceptance.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I was always curious and read extensively, leading to journalism and a passion for literature. For those starting, my advice is to listen to yourself. Regardless of what anybody says, it’s a skill. Your inner voice guides you towards your true purpose. Trusting your instincts and not being afraid of taking chances is important.
That is what I have done my whole life.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The best thing my parents did was let me discover myself without suppression. Whenever I needed them, they were always there – supporting me and listening to what I had to say. They criticized me when necessary and taught me to be empathetic and hardworking. They gave me unconditional love, and I always knew I had someone I could confide in, both the good and the bad. Trust is everything. I am grateful for having them. Today, I know what I can pass on to my future child.
