Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chenyu Yang. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Chenyu, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
As a designer, I believe that my optimism comes from various aspects. The creative process brings optimism to me, starting from imaginative brainstorming to the final implementation of a design. Each experimental exploration contributes step by step to the final result, and I consider this process as the accumulation of confidence and optimism.
Additionally, design is not always a straightforward process. At times, various challenges arise during the design journey. For instance, there may be difficulties with software, and I would seek solutions to overcome them. Similarly, when facing challenges in design thinking and problem-solving, I approach each obstacle one by one. Overcoming these difficulties not only enhances my skills but also brings a sense of optimism when I successfully conquer them.
Lastly, I believe in the impact of design. If my designs can assist people, provide a positive influence, or help elevate the reputation of my clients, it gives me a significant sense of optimism. Knowing that my work can make a positive difference contributes to my overall positive outlook.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Chenyu Yang, and I am a graphic designer from China. I graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design.
I primarily focus on brand design, but I also engage in illustration and motion design. I believe that design is a universal language; it’s just the medium that varies. Therefore, I explore different software to enhance my design capabilities. The most exciting part for me is the beginning of a project when the design is not fully formed. During the initial brainstorming, I can envision numerous creative possibilities, which I find fascinating.
Another aspect I enjoy is the learning experience during each design research. For example, when tasked with designing a logo for Hiiiwav, I delved into their history, target audience, and the atmosphere they exude. This atmosphere became a source of inspiration for me. Understanding the emotions and requirements of the client, I collected colors representing different feelings. While selecting fonts, I discovered that the desires of the font designer aligned closely with the client’s preferences. This prompted me to conduct in-depth research, solidifying my understanding of the font and reinforcing my belief that it was the perfect fit for Hiiiwav. I found this process to be highly interesting.
In my view, design is not just about creating value for others; it is also a journey of self-learning and self-value enhancement.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I believe that creativity and innovation have a significant impact in my journey because, in terms of technical skills, everyone can learn and acquire them through hardware facilities. However, creativity involves breaking away from numerous similar designs, stepping outside the framework, and creating new designs, so I find this to be challenging but profoundly influential for me. Although I mentioned that software skills can be acquired through learning, they are still crucial. In the fast-paced era we are in, where efficiency is essential, design software can help us enhance productivity. Moreover, through software, I can create designs with different textures, making it equally important. Also, communication is important. Even if a designer’s work is visually appealing, without effective communication skills, they may not meet the client’s needs. Only through communication can a designer understand the client’s requirements, preventing wasted effort.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
