Meet Kyle Chin

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kyle Chin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kyle below.

Kyle, thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
My generosity comes from my parents. My mother is no longer with us but I will speak about her like she is. Both my parents are very generous people who believe wholeheartedly in the betterment of the community at large. The idea of social responsibility was planted at a very early age. My father has always been a part of clubs and organisations that give back and my mother founded the outreach program for our church. I believe a man’s responsibility is to affect the world around him in a postiive way. This is also how I think about the films I make. I endeavour to use the artform to instill positive messages and values that can better the human experience.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a Filmmaker , Stunt Coordinator/Choreographer and Retired RFL MMA Middleweight Champion. I am now Managing Director for RFL MMA and seeking to continue to help build the sport in Jamaica and the region.

I have been in the film industry since 2007 and after completing Film school in LA returned home with big dreams of making movies. I have done several short films and mentored many more for a University Film outreach program that I also instruct for.

I am primarily a Director. I am also a Writer, DP and Editor.

Recently I have branched into the Stunt world assistant coordinating and performing on HBO MAX production “Get Millie Black” and the Paramount Pictures Bob Marley story “One Love” among other smaller productions.

The philanthropic group I work with ,876Volunteer, is primarily focused on connecting good hearts to good causes. We essentially try to match people to charities and facilitate projects for a number of causes.

I am currentl building a Stunt performer registery in Jamaica and enlisting perfomers for foreign and local productions.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Both in Film and in Martial Arts I focused on learning the arts as a whole. I sought out different coaches and experts in different arts to train to be well rounded as a fighter. In much the same way as a Director it was important to understand all of the aspects that make a strong film. I worked as a PA, Grip, Gaffer, Camera Assistant , DP, Assistant Director,Producer ,Editor and Writer. I interned on many projects and approached both arts with humility and sought guidance, mentorshiop and knowledge from those who knew better.

I think humility and determination partnered with strong work ethic will take you far. Accept that you dont know it all and no matter how good you think you are there are others who are better. Find those people and learn from them if you can. Confidence and competence comes from hard work. Value yourself based on the real work you put in.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am looking for strong story writers to develop feature length projects. I would help with script development, Direct and connect to distibution etc.

I really want to collaborate on action -comedies, horror and dramas told within a Jamaican context.
