We were lucky to catch up with Phoenix Nicholson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Phoenix , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from wanting to be a great actor, my resilience also comes from my dad, who pushes me and encourages me to do better and motivates me to be the best I can be.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I started my acting career when I was three months old and my dad took me for an audition for the soap opera All My Children, I was the baby of one of the popular couples on the show ( Jesse and Angie). I stayed on the for almost a year and a half until it went off the air. I then segued into doing print ads, and after that I started doing national commercials. I’m currently doing film and television. I feel like I’ve been acting all my life, and I’ve just kind of grown up in front of a camera and because of that, I feel really comfortable on set.
I think the one thing I want people to know about me, is that just like my name Phoenix (the bird that rises out of the ashes), it doesn’t matter how many times I get knocked down, I will always get back up and finish what I started..
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities I think that have helped and propelled me on my journey as an actor
1) is my resilience and my ability to persevere, even when things are tough.
2) my ability to be brave and take risk in front of the camera, without fear of judgment.
3) lastly, I think it’s my desire to be a great actor, and my ability to focus and strive to be the very best I can.
My advice to anyone starting out their acting career, first of all, I strongly suggest that you get a great acting coach, or teacher, who can really help you understand what the craft and process of acting is really all about.
Another thing I think is really important is you have to educate yourself about the business side of acting, because knowledge is power..
lastly, I would encourage anyone who is starting their acting career to remember that anytime you have the opportunity to be on set and in front of the camera absolutely positively always bring your “A” game and do your best work because you never know who is going to see that project.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
In terms of my acting career, the person who has been the most helpful/influential is my dad. He’s helped me prepare for every single addition I’ve ever had, he is on set with me every time I work, he’s the person who makes sure that I’m always prepared for every job, and he is always there to encourage me and remind me of just how talented I am .
Talent+Perseverance= Luck
Every day,
I strive to be better than I was the day before.
