Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Yolanda Knox. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Yolanda, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I believe I get my resilience from my desire to be an example to my grandchildren that you can do anything you put your mind to.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Yolanda Knox and I’m the owner of ArayaSunshine Candle Company. We specialize in handmade scented soy vegan candles, wax melts and room/ car deodorizers and candle making classes. Over 3 years ago I began experimenting with candle making as a away to find a safer alternative to “big box” candles that constantly have me headaches. While perfecting my methods God gave me the name of the company (combination of 2 of my grandchildren names: Aryah and “Sunshine “). I was in shock to say the least. I never thought of myself as a business owner, being a physically disabled person and suffering from chronic pain. Now almost 4 years later we’ve grown and employ 5 other people.
We’ve had our share of challenges over the last couple of years and have come close to giving up, but we’re still here. My prayer and hope is that we can continue to grow and employee people like myself that just need a chance to prove to themselves that they can overcome obstacles if they have the will to do so.
I’m proud to say that ArayaSunshine Candle Company is here to stay and become a household name one day.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The first and foremost thing that I had was determination. I am determined not to be stopped by pain, setbacks or naysayers. Having a strong circle of like minded friends that can inspire and push you is also very important in business. If you’re just starting out, do the research and research some more on your field and you become the expert of your craft. Don’t be satisfied just to copy and paste. Be creative and be you.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I love collaborating with private label customers to create a candle line that fits their company’s style and the tone they want to set with their customers. Boutiques, salons, spas, gift shops, event planners, realtors etc. are my targeted clients.
