We were lucky to catch up with Orin Torati recently and have shared our conversation below.
Orin, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
Fostering creativity is crucial, I like to ensure to dedicate time to my personal projects alongside client work. Keeping up to date with the latest new technologies, exploring fellow artists’ creations, and delving into both new and established references keep me engaged across diverse creative domains.
While I believe that true originality is rare (we can’t reinvent the wheel), I feel that reconsidering established art forms and applying existing techniques in novel ways leads to innovative solutions.
My background in architecture and current role as a creative director have taught me the significance of consistently reinventing one’s approach. This ensures the delivery of optimal and highly creative solutions or proposals.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a designer, creative director, and 3D artist specializing in worldbuilding, animation, visual storytelling, and a blend of live-action and CGI. Currently, I serve as an assistant teacher in SCI-Arc’s Fiction and Entertainment postgraduate program, where I contribute to the academic community. Alongside three close friends and fellow filmmakers and designers, I co-founded RAWx, a production studio dedicated to speculative worldbuilding, managing various pipelines within the entertainment industry.
Having graduated from SCI-Arc’s F&E program and previously earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees in architecture at KU Leuven, my work, led by narrative and visual storytelling, is deeply rooted in spatial design.
My portfolio spans installations, concert visuals, music videos, film, and animation. Existing at the intersection of design and fiction, I am committed to pushing boundaries by creatively exploiting technologies to craft revolutionary aesthetics and narratives.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My foundation in architecture has been instrumental in cultivating qualities and skills that remain pivotal in my life. Foremost among them is spatial perception, a skill crucial for delivering impactful spatial designs.
Additionally, my journey as an architect instilled in me the virtues of persistence and continuous self-development. These qualities, honed during my studies, have proven invaluable across various situations over the years.
Furthermore, my expertise extends to technology, particularly in harnessing its power to transform creative ideas into dynamic visuals. Mastering this skill requires consistent practice—a principle akin to the 10,000-hour rule, emphasizing the dedication needed to become proficient in a craft.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
In an ideal client relationship, there exists a collaborative dynamic that thrives on creative freedom. Such a client would entrust me with the latitude to envision and design a compelling “world” that seamlessly aligns with the essence of their product, service, or ideas. This creative autonomy is pivotal for producing work that transcends conventional boundaries and resonates authentically with the client’s vision.
Moreover, the ideal client would actively engage in open and constructive conversations. These discussions would delve into the creative problem-solving process, addressing challenges that inevitably arise. A willingness to explore diverse perspectives and innovative solutions would characterize our interactions. This collaborative dialogue ensures that we navigate complexities together, fostering a partnership built on shared insights and a mutual commitment to achieving the most impactful and innovative outcomes.
