We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Avital Miller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Avital, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
When it comes to resilience, I have been nicknamed a “One-Woman Campaign Against You’ll Never.” I healed from an autoimmune disorder beyond what my doctors expected. I was told I could not write, yet I published the four-time award-winning and best-selling book Healing Happens: Stories of Healing Against All Odds (www.healinghappensbook.com). My college ballet instructor told me I would never amount to anything in dance. Yet, I performed in front of thousands of people nationally televised at the Miss South India Pageant. I was in an abusive marriage, but I have never given up hope of finding a good man. I used to be the shy girl, yet today, I speak on stage in front of hundreds of people and host a 250-person charity event.
Three key things stand out when considering what helped me overcome these seemingly insurmountable challenges. The first is following what I am inspired to do ruthlessly. Some things felt so right to do and consumed me that I did not have space to think about doubts. I loved doing those things so much that I did not care if they amounted to anything or if I failed. At some point, I ended up in the right place at the right time, where things came together synergistically, but only because I kept going.
Being trained in yoga, meditation, energy healing, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, and various personal development techniques, I have many tools I can pull out of the hat to help me recover quickly from any challenge that presents itself. Even more helpful is that I have spent a lot of time clearing out past traumas, learning intuitive skills, and building inner strength. This helps me just glaze over many challenges as they happen, so they do not impact me, and I do not even need to work on recovering. Thus, my second key is to heal your inner wounds and build the light within you.
Lastly, stay energized. Feeling energetic not only gives me the energy to accomplish all that I do but also the motivation, positive perspective, and ability to apply superconscious problem-solving to find smart solutions quickly to obstacles that arise. Having more energy is another result of clearing my past problems. It also comes from the special energizing exercises I do, meditation, eating well, and other lifestyle habits.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My life and my work can be considered a Transcendance where we move through the process of transcending life like a dance. It may not always look graceful, but eventually, it gets there. We may fall, but we can get back up again. We may accidentally step on other people’s toes, but we can heal those wounds. My work is to help others transcend, bringing our desires to reality one step at a time.
From program manager at Microsoft to healer to corporate leadership seminar facilitator, I offer opportunities for people to feel boundless energy, absolute happiness, and true success through various modalities and platforms. A good place to start is the Sit and Succeed virtual program, where we approach your everyday life challenges like wanting to achieve glowing health and vitality, having more energy, having the courage to take the next step in your career, attract a partner, or develop your intuition through beyond the cutting-edge wisdom, meditation, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (sitandsucceed.com). Maybe you prefer a home study on your health and healing through my book Healing Happens or through various online healing courses (healinghappensforyou.com). Or let’s work together in leadership, team-building, and stress management for the leaders at your company (www.avitalmiller.com/speaking).
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three perspectives that have influenced my journey the most are:
1. Working with rather than against what is happening: When I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s and Hypothyroidism, instead of trying to get rid of it, I asked, “How can I live with it?” That led me to the curious search for how to improve my health, which then gave me an understanding of how to improve my mental and emotional health, relationships, and lifestyle. If I had focused on how to get rid of it, I would have just been met with a lot of stress trying to control something I do not necessarily have control over.
2. Staying focused on my mission: While we were searching for my health diagnosis at twenty-seven years old it seemed I just kept getting sicker and sicker. When searching my symptoms on the internet, it felt like going down a rabbit hole to potentially having all kinds of diseases. As I started to wonder if I was going to continue to get sicker until I died, something inside me knew I had a future ahead of me of helping many people and there was no way my life would end so young. Focusing on this mission to help uplift others gave me the drive to move forward and joy in the process.
3. Success starts within: Prioritizing improving my physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health has been the greatest anchor I could have. It has helped me weather many storms more smoothly, continues to make life easier and easier, and provides me with more inner joy no matter what happens outwardly. The great yoga guru Paramhansa Yogananda said, “Circumstances are neutral.” How we perceive situations in life is variable. How we feel inside about them is more in our control. Success also lies in how I perceive myself in every circumstance.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Being someone who is very creative, motivated, and fully dives into everything I do, I get overwhelmed a lot and thus have a lot of practice on how to calm it down when it shows up. Here are three steps that have helped myself and my clients once we notice we are in a state of overwhelm: 1. Change your state: We cannot think straight when emotionally distraught. Thus, go do something else to shift the way you feel and be able to re-approach how to minimize overwhelm from a calmer state. Go for a walk, take five deep breaths, turn on your favorite song and dance for five minutes, spend time with a friend, work on a more fun project… Choose anything that feels better than what you are doing to help shift your state.
2. Get grounded: Overwhelm is accompanied by a lot happening at once and scattered energy. There are specific things you can do to still the movement and feel more centered again. Some of the things you can do to feel more grounded include eat foods that grow into the ground like carrots, beats or potatoes, walk on the grass barefoot, or sit on the ground feeling the connection of your tailbone to the earth while you take five deep breaths.
3. Re-examine your priorities: I trust in the natural order that anything truly required of oneself is also within our capability to achieve. If something feels like it is making me out of balance then I examine my choices, beliefs, and mental state to learn how to reduce the feeling of overwhelm. Within this assessment, some of the questions I ask are: For what reason do I think this is so important? Does it really need to be done in the time I have been thinking it should? What would be the consequence of not doing it, not being a perfectionist, or taking longer? Can someone else do it? Is there an attitude that is causing me to feel overwhelmed, and how can I shift that?
With changing our emotional or mental state, getting grounded, and examining our priorities, we can help reduce overwhelm and return to a life of energy, joy, and flow.
