We recently connected with Josh Sahunta and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Josh, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I got my resilience from watching my parents be resilient through the hardship and poverty they faced when I was a young child. Seeing how they had the drive and determination to get us out of that financial situation was incredibly inspiring to me. They did odd jobs wherever they could find them, and never gave up in the face of adversity. It was through that sheer determination alone that they got us out of that situation. I carry that same mentality now that I have my own family to never give up when things get tough and to keep finding ways to kick doors open when they seem closed.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a full-time musician, songwriter, composer and music producer. I have been making music professionally now since 2017, and really got my first major opportunities in 2020 (ironically).
I have been primarily involved with making music for major Netflix shows such as “Love is Blind” and “Love Island”, and I’ve also done music for several television advertisements as well. When I’m not behind the computer making music, I’m touring and performing music all over the world. I’ve toured across Canada and the UK, and continue to perform at festivals across both countries.
I produce my own music, as well as music for other artists, and I am very thankful to be able to do what I love every single day, and make a good income from it.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1) Kindness I’ve always been very intentional to be kind to everybody I meet, in both professional, and non-professional settings. This has helped me to build good relationships with many different people, who have then kept me in mind for opportunities that came up years down the line. People remember when you treat them well.
2) Diversity
One skill I can say that without a doubt has benefited me in my career is diversifying my income portfolio. I have learned many different skills within music that have created avenues of income for me through the years. For example, I taught myself music production years ago in order so that I wouldn’t have to pay somebody else to do that for me. It’s now become a skill that makes me money, as I am producing music for other artists now.
3) Reliability
Show up for every meeting and every session prepared and on time. Showing even just this level of professionalism speaks volumes.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I have a journal called “The Productivity Planner”, which splits my to-do list into 3 categories: 1) the “I HAVE to finish this today list”
2) the “these are also important but don’t necessarily need to get done today” list
and 3) the “it would be nice to get these done but there’s no real rush” list.
This has helped me to hone in on what is actually essential to get done for each day so that I don’t get overwhelmed with the building task lists.
