Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lauren Kleeman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lauren, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever head any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?
Something my screenwriting teacher told me was amateurs write when they’re inspired, professionals write despite being inspired. Getting over the self resistance of saying you’re not in the mood to write is a luxury afforded only by amateurs.
Show up for yourself.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Ever since she high-kicked her way out of the womb, Lauren has had a passion for telling stories. She wants to bring more satires, allegories, and parodies to the world but with a feminine twist. Whether she writes about healthy eating, classism, or naked Jesus she creates magical worlds full of puns and absurd jokes, aiming to teach life lessons wrapped in a hilarious package.
Most recently, I’ve been prepping to release my debut short film “Trailer Park Queen” about Norma, a trailer trash sexagenarian joins the county fair beauty pageant in an attempt to win back her cheating ex-husband, along the way inspiring other older women to compete, creating her own definition of beauty, and discovering self love. It’s a proof of concept for my award winning feature screenplay “Hillbilly Bath.”
The short film will premiere in January and then hit the festival circuit. We are currently looking for funding for the feature.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Believing in myself: such an underrated, important part of anyone’s artistic journey. I wasted way too many years making excuses for why I wasn’t thriving the way I wanted to, but the biggest obstacle was myself. 2. Believing in others: having a stellar crew of talented people you trust to bring to life a film is so important. You can’t do everything yourself and sharing the journey makes it all the more special.
3. Be like water, my friend: life shifts and turns at unexpected times and always being able to adapt and flow with the situation will do you wonders.
You can do it. Being ‘ready’ is a myth. Stop holding yourself back. You got this.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Emotional intelligence. This has been tremendous in understanding myself and others both in work and life. My compassion, empathy and understanding has increased 10 fold and allowed me to open my heart to others in such a beautiful way.
