Meet Osungu Szpenalowski

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Osungu Szpenalowski. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Osungu below.

Osungu, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I know that this might come off as egotistical but I truly do get my resilience from my father and life in general. As a little girl, I watched him work so hard in building a successful career for an American oil company in Cameroon, but then losing it all. He then decided to start his own medical billing company about a year later which so happened to be the best decision that he made for himself and for his family. His resilience and determination has inspired me to want more out of life and to never give up on myself.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Osungu Szpernalowski. My husband and I are owners of a construction company in Dallas, TX and we were blessed with a beautiful and very loving little girl. I can’t say that construction is incredibly exciting but we love helping rebuild and repair homes that are in great need of it. The joy comes from seeing the residents express how happy they are after each job is completed.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Hard work, perseverance and networking. We work with thousands of residents and several offices, property managers etc and it’s imperative that you remain calm and collected even when there are misunderstandings. Practice your craft and attend networking events, not only with people from the same industry. When you eventually grow your business and are able to employ contractors, treat them with the outmost respect. We love our contractors and we won’t be where we are without them. Most importantly, never give up.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
I went through some very traumatic experiences as a child, which are still haunting me until this day. It is not until I started talking to a therapist about being sexually abused from age 4 by family members until I was about 8years old did I figure out why I had so much anxiety in social situations and build up anger issues. I felt that I needed to be a part of a community or charity that fights against child sexual abuse because I remember having no one. Being in boarding school from age 9 for about 8 years or so, was truly a safe haven for me. After joining Child Rescue Coalition to help fight against such outrageous crime committed against children, I feel a little bit of peace and purpose.
