Meet Josh Holm

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Josh Holm. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Josh below.

Hi Josh , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
I’ve always felt like my differences became my superpowers. I’m very proud to be Black and Korean representing both of my cultures hopefully in the best way possible. I think a lot of modern influence has come from both of these cultures, especially within the progression of fashion and trends. Using my uniqueness and moving in these rooms as if I belong, because I do, have helped tremendously in my artistic journey and ventures.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Josh Holm and I’m the founder and creative director of Castles & Queens, a third year mens and womenswear brand based in the heart of Los Angeles. The brand specializes in visuals and most recently was placed in Forbes 30 under 30, Art and Style category.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would say establishing a work ethic and disciplining your daily routine proved wonders. Any artist is going to feel like giving up at some point, so making sure you are your number one fan and establishing a belief that your dream is possible. Learning from others in the industry who offer their time and resources was a big step for me in learning what I now know about fashion and manufacturing. For a long time I accepted knowledge as a form of payment and it has paid off down the road.

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I’ve always wanted to be the type of founder that walked through my studio or workspace and knew a bit of every aspect of the company. When you can’t be replaced you become an immovable piece and it forces you outside your comfort zones to sharpen and hone in on your skills and what makes you eventually successful.
