Meet Kerlin Sabogal

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kerlin Sabogal a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Kerlin , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Growing up in humble circumstances often brings with it a unique set of challenges and opportunities. In such an environment, values are cultivated not just through words, but through lived experiences and the resilience required to navigate life’s hurdles. My purpose is, in part, a reflection of the values instilled in me during my upbringing. The emphasis on education, in particular, stands out as a guiding force.

The belief that education is a way out of poverty became a driving force, motivating me to strive for academic excellence and personal growth. it’s about empowerment, breaking the cycle of limited opportunities, and paving the way for a better future.

My purpose has been shaped by the desire to redefine the trajectory of my life and, perhaps, that of future generations around me. This sense of purpose is deeply rooted in my understanding that education has the power to transform not only individuals but entire communities.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I was born and raised in Colombia, specifically on the small island of San Andres. My parents and humble beginnings instilled in me a deep appreciation for education to break the cycle of poverty. I developed a dream of pursuing a master’s degree in a language foreign to my native tongue, which, unknowingly to me at the time, truly set the stage for my mission to create positive change.

At the age of 23, armed with determination and a sense of purpose, I made the courageous decision to step out of my comfort zone and cross borders in pursuit of higher education. Leaving behind the familiarity of my homeland, I embraced both my identity as a woman and a budding professional, venturing into the unknown with the belief that education could be a catalyst for change.

The genesis of my dream to pursue a master’s degree in a language foreign to my native tongue was an unexpected yet transformative chapter in my life. Little did I know that this seemingly personal aspiration would set the stage for a larger mission—to create positive change in both my own life and the lives of those around me.

My journey was not merely an academic pursuit; it was a response to a profound calling to make a difference, particularly in uplifting youth facing the harsh realities of poverty. Fueled by a vision that emphasized mentorship, access to technology, and addressing fundamental needs as the pillars of transformation, I embarked on a transformative mission that would lead to the establishment of my organization, The Courage to Bee.

The Courage to Bee became a platform for empowerment, where I could leverage my experiences, skills, and education to uplift youth facing adversity. Through mentorship programs, technology initiatives, and community engagement, the organization worked towards breaking the cycle of poverty and fostering a sense of resilience and courage in the hearts of young individuals in the state of Texas, the Caribbean & LatinAmerica. Currently with projects in Houston & McAllen, Texas, Dominican Republic & Honduras, And very soon Colombia.

In embracing the dual roles of womanhood and professionalism, I sought to inspire others, particularly young women, to defy societal expectations and pursue their aspirations fearlessly. The Courage to Bee became a testament to the transformative power of education, courage, and the unwavering belief that every individual possesses the potential to create positive change.

In retrospect, my journey from Colombia to the US and the subsequent establishment of The Courage to Bee exemplify the profound impact that one individual can have when driven by a calling to make a difference. It underscores the idea that, regardless of our origins, we can transcend borders and use our experiences to uplift others, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive and empowered global community.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge stood out as particularly impactful:

Resilience:
The ability to bounce back from setbacks and navigate challenges with resilience was crucial. Moving to a new country, adapting to a different culture, and pursuing a master’s degree in a foreign language presented numerous obstacles. Developing resilience allowed me to persevere through difficulties, learn from failures, and maintain a sense of determination. To develop resilience, it’s essential to view challenges as opportunities for growth, cultivate a positive mindset, and build a support network of mentors, friends, or family who can provide guidance and encouragement.

Cross-Cultural Competence:
Embracing and understanding diverse cultures played a pivotal role in my journey. The ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries facilitated not only my academic success but also the establishment of my organization. To enhance cross-cultural competence, engage in cultural exchange experiences, seek out diverse perspectives, and actively listen to others’ stories. Embrace the richness that diversity brings, as it can be a powerful asset in navigating an interconnected global landscape.

Vision and Goal Setting:
Having a clear vision of the positive change I wanted to create and setting tangible goals provided direction and motivation. It allowed me to stay focused amid the myriad challenges and uncertainties. Early in your journey, take the time to reflect on your values, aspirations, and the impact you want to make. Set both short-term and long-term goals, breaking them down into actionable steps. Regularly revisit and adjust your goals as needed, recognizing that the journey may evolve, and new opportunities may arise.

For those early in their journey, here’s some advice:

Embrace Curiosity and Continuous Learning:
Cultivate a mindset of curiosity and a commitment to lifelong learning. Stay open to new ideas, experiences, and perspectives. Seek out opportunities for professional development, whether through formal education, online courses, or hands-on experiences. The willingness to learn continuously will equip you with the adaptability needed to navigate a dynamic and ever-changing world.

Build a Support Network:
Surround yourself with a supportive network of mentors, peers, and friends. Share your goals and challenges with trusted individuals who can provide guidance, encouragement, and constructive feedback. A strong support network can be a source of inspiration during tough times and can celebrate your achievements with you.

Take Calculated Risks:
Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and take calculated risks. Growth often comes from embracing challenges and pushing your boundaries. Assess risks thoughtfully, weigh the potential rewards, and be willing to embrace new opportunities, even if they seem daunting at first. The courage to take risks can lead to transformative experiences and unexpected opportunities.

Remember, the journey is unique for each individual, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Embrace the lessons that come with challenges, celebrate your successes, and stay true to your passion and purpose.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
