We were lucky to catch up with LaTasha Woods recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi LaTasha , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Many times this means the rules of success are somewhat different than they are for others. I have learned through experience, that being uncomfortable is an advantage, as it has been key in pushing me to be innovative and always a high performer. When I’m tempted to stop showing up, I feel as though I have an obligation to those coming up behind me to persevere and demonstrate my best efforts, even if my work may go unnoticed at times. It’s another way to keep that door of opportunity open for others.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I grew up in a military family, which allowed me the opportunity to connect with a diverse group of people, and to not just sit at the table but actually move to the front of the room. Being open to change was instilled in me at a young age. Most importantly, I have always been taught to be servant -hearted with a self-sacrificing love for other people and that has brought me to where I am today,
My first book is a short romance novel, “Top Draft Pick”. It reminds us all that your path doesn’t need to look like someone else’s to be purposeful and meaningful. My children books, “Dollars & $ense; Financial Literacy for Kids,” are to help set our youth up for success in planting the seed early for money management, and learning how to earn and save. My most recently published book is “Memory Book for Adults and Seniors.” The activities inside are specifically crafted to challenge your brain and memory. My self published books that I have written are to be resources for others so that in some way or form, I help someone along the way,
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Critical thinking, decision making, and a prayer life.
There’s no such thing as one right way in life, and hardly anyone gets everything right the first time. My advice is to accept thot life is unpredictable and be ready for the unexpected. Mistakes will happen along the way but try to minimize those mishaps and learn from it. Lessons can become blessings.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents taught me the significance of family and nurturing relationships. They emphasized the value of spending quality time with loved ones, and being there for each other. This lesson has reinforced the importance of creating a strong bond with people and reinforcing positive relationships in my life.
