Meet Thomas Reale

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Thomas Reale. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Thomas, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Well, to be very honest; it is something that I still struggle with at times. But I continue to put myself out there all the time. In terms of my photography, I am constantly shooting and showing my work wherever and whenever I can and have found people who enjoy and connect with my style.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
It’s an old story. I was in a job that I wasn’t really happy in, and as luck would have it, I got laid off. And instead of looking at it as a crisis, I saw it as an opportunity. I had just recently sold a few of my pictures and was really interested in exploring that side of me so I started approaching local businesses asking if they would show my work. Some people said no, but more said yes, so I was having opening opening receptions and taking part in open studios and pop up art shows.
Putting yourself out there is fun- but also scary. As your first question alluded to “ imposter syndrome” is a real thing and something that I still struggle with.
But I DO believe in my work and know that there are people out there that connect with it when they see it.
As far as my dog walking is concerned, it all started because of Covid and the explosion of “pandemic puppies “ in my neighborhood.
I lost my pup right before Covid hit and needed my puppy love, so I started telling neighbors that I could walk their dogs if they needed.
It is a win/ win situation for everyone!
I feel so lucky to being doing things I love. Photography, dogs- sometimes cats. It’s harder than people think, but it’s a lot of fun.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
It’s funny because I don’t consider myself to be special in anyway, although it has occurred to me that over the years I have always found a way to explore sides and passions of mine to help me keep going. I don’t know if I have advice, but the only thing I can say is, don’t give up. Don’t be afraid of putting yourself out there- especially in terms of art- you can’t sell your art if nobody sees it.
I don’t consider myself to be especially socially adept – but get me talking about photography, dogs- or food; then I can talk to you forever. So, be passionate about what you do!
And, failure is real and unavoidable. But, you keep on moving until you find what works for you.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Circling back to the first question – “ How did you overcome Imposter Syndrome” I still struggle with it. The best way to get over it though is to just keep putting yourself out there. Whether it be my photography- I feel that my composition and ability to capture light and shadow continues to improve.
Or my ability to connect with my dog and cat clients- making them feel loved and happy is a strength of mine.
I know I am not perfect – who wants to be. But I know my strengths and keep working on keeping them strong.
