We were lucky to catch up with Marta Sulima recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marta, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
It definitely took me a long time to truly find what I wanted to do with my life. I spent many years pursuing a degree in Chemistry, and even have a PhD. However, I honestly never felt like I really belonged in this field. It was something I was good at from High School and I just continued pursuing it through college and then grad school. Eventually, I found my way to turning my passion for photography and the outdoors into my career. Now I am an adventure elopement photographer based in Colorado, and I really feel like I found my purpose in helping couples create their perfect day with incredible experiences! Not to say that your career needs to define your purpose in life, but I really feel like I am where I belong on this new path.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am an adventure elopement photographer based in Colorado. I help couples have the absolute best day celebrating their love! Whether it’s hiking, skiing, or something simple like picnicking in beautiful mountain scenery, I want couples to experience something special on their wedding day. It’s so important to me that couples are finding ways to celebrate their marriage with activities that are exciting to them and represent a part of their relationship! I have always loved spending time outside and I love being able to help my couples find the perfect spots in the state of Colorado for their elopement day. I even hiked 14 miles in a day with one of my couples so they could read their vows in a spot no one has ever gotten married before! You name your adventure, and I am there!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Persistence is one of the keys to my success in my business. I have never given up and continue to persevere despite many challenges! I also think my ability to problem solve, which I will honestly attribute to going through so many years of school, has also really helped me troubleshoot many areas of my business. When something is not working or going how I want, I work really hard to find a way to fix it. Finally, I invested in photography education to really hone in on my skills. Like I mentioned before, photography was always a passion of mine, but never something I studied until I decided to pursue it as a career!
I think there is a lot of great education for photographers out there, but it can be tricky to know what might be best. I definitely recommend finding education from other photographers who have a similar style and area of expertise that you want to achieve.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client are couples who are ready to break tradition and do something special and unique on their wedding day! My ideal clients want to go on an adventure and aren’t afraid to maybe get their wedding dress or suit a little dirty. They love the outdoors and just want to spend the day with their loved one having the best time among the mountains.
