Meet Duy Tran

We recently connected with Duy Tran and have shared our conversation below.

Duy, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
My optimism comes from seeking and pursuing what excites me creatively.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I compose, arrange and produce music for singers and visual media projects.

The most exciting thing about my job is the collaboration with different talented artists: learning about their artistic persona and working creatively together. The bond and the artistic creations are special to me.

For commercial, I have written music for clients such as Sony, Samsung, La Roche Posay, Tetra Pak…

I also work with Grammy-winning soprano Sangeeta Kaur, as co-producer on her award-winning album “Aurora” (2023), and as music director for her PBS “Front and Center” TV concert (2021).

In 2019, “Under Darkness”, a film that I composed the score, was one of the finalists of Student Academy Award (Oscar) and College Television Award (Emmy). My film score has also been showcased at Sundance Film Festival, HollyShorts Film Festival,…

My work as music producer with pianist BEE Uyen Phuong has garnered an array of awards, including Best Instrumental Producer, Producer of the Year and Recording of the Year at the 2021 Indie Music Channel, and a Hollywood Music in Media award nomination (World music category).

I have also produced a number of Vietnamese hit songs, most notably song the “Ve Voi Em” (Come with Me) by Vo Ha Tram (19 million Youtube views).

I also teach Composition classes at Musicians Institute (College of Contemporary Music),

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think the three most impactful qualities in my journey are:

– Work hard
– Be nice
– Be patient

My advice for folks who are early in their journey is to enjoy the good times, and embrace the tough moments. Both are equally important to your journey.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My parents had a significant impact on my career, as they were my first music teachers. My mother is a piano teacher at the HCMC Conservatory of Music (Vietnam), and my father is a self-taught musician. My mother started me on classical piano when I was six, then my father taught me music theory, contemporary genres piano and arranging. That is the start of my musical journey, and I am always grateful for it.
