We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mario Corona. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mario below.
Mario, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I believe creativity is a fast, constant conversation happening between your head and your surroundings, a dialogue you can have and find everywhere, in the clouds when you find a familiar shape, in a sound that reminds you to something close, in the mixing of things, so in the end, you get to choose the best one for you and find fulfillment. We all have pre-conceived information about things, our perception works in a personal way and
I think, that in order to keep up with your creativity, you gotta be open, imaginative and curious, just like scientists.
Curiosity makes you go forward, it takes you to the edge of the cliff, you marvel of the landscape, and this inspires you to make a move. If you find satisfaction, then I believe you’re in the right path.
Personally, I think situations like the lock down during the pandemic and the strikes, ignite that creativity, cause ‘things stops’ but your mind doesn’t.
This question also reminded me of what Treplev from ‘The Seagull’ by Anton Chekhov said, ‘We need new artistic forms, new means of expression, and if we don’t get them, it would be better to have none at all.’ Of course, Treplev was on a different more radical circumstance, but you get the idea.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hello World! My name is Mario Corona and I am an Actor and Producer from México. There comes a time as an actor, where there’s a need to tell a story, and this has lead me to produce it, to find a way to make it and share it.
I am also a runner, which I like to describe as a ‘meditation in motion’ activity, of course you’re not always meditating, but at least running gives you the chance to think in advance of many things as you’re aware of your surroundings. So I came across with this idea of combining running and acting, and one day the perfect match was created ‘running lines’, and I just started it as a project, which basically is: shooting some lines from films, plays or poems while running, they’re ready to go soon, and I’m very excited for this.
I have found freedom in the process, time, and the right voice while producing my projects.
I am crossing the decade here in LA and coming from abroad, has given me a chance to adapt, contribute and collaborate with fellow peers from many parts of the world. This unique mosaic, is very interesting to see and be a part of, because you get to experience the ratio of thoughts and ways of thinking, in order to make a film.
I am very thankful to be on set and play different characters in stories that matter.
Our film Adentro (Inside), directed by the talented Javier Solórzano Casarín, is a drama/thriller, and was recently screened at the International Film Festival of India in Goa, as part of the Official Selection of the ‘Cinema of the World’ section. It follows the story of three estranged siblings who meet after their mother’s passing, only to sell, through unique conditions, the house they lived their painful childhood.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Many people can develop a set of skills, learn from knowledge of things and events, but if I was to put all these three in one sentence, that would be: ‘What is difficult, make it easy, what is easy, make it a habit and what is a habit, make it beautiful.’ This memorable phrase was coined by my drama teacher Iouri Borisevich, and is full of wisdom in regards to our acting process. Everything is hard in the beginning, then becomes easier and then enters ‘routine’ as discipline, so you can finally turn it into art. I’d encourage everyone to follow it, and follow your own instincts, but find a good moment to make everything you have learned into a habit, a good habit.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Believing in me, supporting me and being there for me for what I love since I was a kid. Whether it was an Indiana Jones home movie, or traveling the world Indy style, to make a home in another country.
In the twenty years living on my own and ten abroad, I have learned from them about being thankful, self reliance, honesty, sacrifice, patience, strategy, etc.
All these values, have been very helpful and there’s always a chance to thank them for tsuch a gift.
These values have helped me through the time I have been living in LA, my dad has told me to remember my successful moments, whenever I feel lonely or sad, and yes, success is so personal and simple to me, that I consider a smile back at me as that success, to me, success is not the fancy, glamorous, in the spotlight thing, but rather the maintenance of those values as pillars of your dreams.
Gracias papás!
