Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tobore Oweh. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Tobore , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from my mother! Growing up, I watched her work so hard to carry my family. We always had everything we needed and she made sure of that! Whenever I feel like given up or feeling defeated, I think about my mother, how hard she worked and how hard she still works till today! It gives me motivation to keep pushing through!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the owner & creative director of The Petal Effect, a floral & design studio dedicated to amplifying and celebrating Black stories. The most exciting thing about The Petal Effect is truly watching it blossom over the last 3 years and the years to come. We started as a company just taking daily flower orders from everyday customers. Then we shifted our efforts to working with just corporate brands. Now, we’re at a phase of not just offering a product or service to these brands, but adding meaningful purpose to what we do. We are more than a company, we are a brand! Although I am a Solopreneur and wear all the hats, I get so excited about creatively directing each project we take on! From the idea phase all the way to execution, it brings me so much joy bringing a design idea to life! Flowers are so special because of the joy and smiles they instantly demand!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1) Your Why – keeping why you started your business in your heart will be monumental in the journey of entrepreneurship. Whenever you get off track, or feel lost, use it as your North Star to ground you and remind you of your purpose
2) Community – building a community of support and resources is detrimental to your success. My motto is and has always been “closed mouths don’t get fed”
3) Consistency – consistency builds character, patience, and stamina. Owning and operating a business is not for the faint of hearts. There are going be times you absolutely do not “feel like doing it” but the success of your business depends on how much time and effort you are willing to invest
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal clients are corporate brands looking to do their part in dismantling systematic racism and anti-blackness. They are looking to amplify Black voices and celebrate Black stories to shift the undermining narrative that has crippled Black folks for generations. Within these brands, we work with their creative & art directors, event planners, experiential marketers, culture specialists, PR, production & social media teams to bring the project to life!
