Meet Selena Day

We were lucky to catch up with Selena Day recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Selena , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
By learning to listen. I haven’t met a person who does not enjoy sharing something about their life. People are hungry for connection. Living in the new world with social media, we are inundated with voices and opinions from different lifestyles and culture. It is like water to a thirsty soul when a person sits and listens. I have found that you do not need to agree with anyone to just be present for them. People are more apt to have confidence in your authority if they feel as if you care about them as a person.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I have spent the majority of my adult life traveling. My husband is a christian artist and I am a motivational speaker to women and children. I have also been a mentor for an organization that sent young people to other nations for humanitarian work. I raised three daughters while traveling. Depending on the season of our life we traveled in our vehicle, a tour bus, as well as flying. I gained a great education from traveling. From logistics to communication, our travels taught me many of my strengths and weaknesses. Traveling opens you up to hear from our creator in a way that nothing else has done for me in my life. I am passionate about sharing this with those who travel with A Woman’s Journey.

As women, we spend our lives working and caring for those we love. In the day-to-day care of making sure their needs are met, we begin to lose touch with our own desires and dreams. Coming together with a multigenerational group of women, to share meals, to laugh and pray together as we rediscover that inner passion that may have been lost or forgotten. A woman’s journey is designed to be a self-discovery trip for each individual.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
As a believer, I have always felt that each person is designed for a specific purpose and if we work on our relationship to the one who formed us (the creator of life) then we can begin to see life as a classroom to learn from and not become defeated or left behind.

To always see yourself as loved. I know it is hard to know that, but if you will see yourself as loved by the one who made you then you can have compassion and generosity to those you come in contact with.

I have always been a person that valued fun. And in my early years without wisdom, I did not know that you can use fun to accomplish many things. I wasted years just wanting to party and socialize without direction. Now, I focus that desire for fun living into projects that matter and into people I can help to become a better version of themselves.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Because of the unique program at A Women’s Journey we are always looking for participants that are open for adventure and want to travel with a purpose.

Our trips are not just site seeing trips. They are designed to allow each person to relax, stop and renew. As we get older we tend to lose the zest in our lives and at AWJ we want to help people find that once again.

Many times in my travels I have gone back to the same places over and over. Each time I have discovered something different about myself, about the area and/or about the culture in that region. So when planning a trip I always take that into consideration. Whether a person has traveled a lot or it is their first time our trips are designed to impact people. We want you to walk away from the destination with a full heart and new friends.
