Meet Maia Alexander

We were lucky to catch up with Maia Alexander recently and have shared our conversation below.

Maia, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I had to learn to trust in myself, and own up to being something never seen before. As a business owner, you have to constantly break barriers, internally and externally to be two percent better everyday. I used to be fearful, and shy away while feeling embarrassed. This was until I mastered a simple concept. Why run away when you already kicked down the front door? This question assisted me in leveraging my unique perspective as a strength, embracing diversity, and fostering open communication. In return, I became more confident. I know deep down I contribute valuable insights that enrich the collective experience. This enrichment is personally placed in each and every one of my business models , as well as my everyday behavior towards all living beings. Once I grasped these principles, it almost felt as if a weight was lifted from my shoulders. The clarity forced me to realize one important thing: you must live your own life to determine the true definition of success. If you live for the right reasons, then your aura will be forced to not only be present in any room, but inspire the entire perimeter.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
In this exciting chapter of my journey, I’ve wholeheartedly embraced the pursuit of my passions, culminating in the establishment of Paws & Stay LLC in Houston, TX. My mission is to redefine pet care by providing tailored, in-home services that prioritize the comfort and well-being of both pets and their owners. Paws & Stay stands out as a sanctuary for those who seek an alternative to traditional boarding facilities, offering a personalized and stress-free solution. My commitment to excellence, paired with a deep love for animals, has fueled the creation of an experience that transcends conventional pet care. Though I have over 7 years of pet care/sitting experience, this is just the beginning. What was first a side hustle to get by in school has now transitioned itself into a full fledge business. As I embark on this venture, I’m thrilled to announce the grand opening, marking the beginning of a new era in pet hospitality. Join us in celebrating this milestone and the promise of unparalleled service for your beloved companions.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My three nuggets of advice to anyone are: 1. Find something you’re passionate in. It’s okay to have multiple, but start with one.
2. Work to master it. You have to gain experience to become an expert. Work until you can’t work anymore, then work some more.
3. Monetize it. We’re not speaking of only money here. Monetize your time, monetize your effort, find people and inspire them of your mission. The more you inspire, the more they invest in you. Learn that this is for the long term. Create an empire, scale it beyond your own wildest thoughts, and reap the benefits.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
Adversity Quotient: Turning Obstacles into Opportunities by Paul Stolkes. It is a must read if you want to ever be truly proud of yourself, and learn who you actually are. Your Adversity Quotient is the science of your resilience. Hone it, and create the life you desire. You can become a quitter, a camper, or climber. Each type comes with a different measure of success, and different price to pay to reach that. If you remember anything from my interview, remember to always be a climber. Even when boulders are thrown down your path, even when 10 feet snow grabs at your ankles, even when you feel your hands going numb you keep climbing.
