Meet Kimtsy Sanchez Gomez

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kimtsy Sanchez Gomez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Kimtsy, thanks for sitting with us today to chat about topics that are relevant to so many. One of those topics is communication skills, because we live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?
I think that I developed my ability to communicate effectively in the workplace through my experiences with my previous managers. I had quite a few bad managers in the past and I would just make a mental note of every time I felt their tone could have been better or when there were things that they would say that I didn’t really appreciate. I wanted to sear this in my mind because I knew that if I ever wanted to be either a manager myself or just communicate with clients I would have to do better. I am very much a person that believes in treat people the way you want to be treated so I try my best to speak in a manner I would want someone to speak to me. I also have a therapist I work with who has helped me with boundaries and how to communicate that to not just people in my everyday life but also to clients.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the owner of Peony & Blush Makeup Artistry, which is a Luxury Hair and Makeup Company. We have artists located all over Southern California who specialize in wedding hair and makeup. We want our clients to have the celebrity experience when they work with us, so we bring basically an entire studio to them. Our kits and setups include chairs, studio lighting, high end and prestige makeup and hair brands. We will even bring tables with us if need be. We bring the convenience of the salon to the client.
When it comes to our makeup style, clients come to us for a natural beauty look. They want to look like themselves just an elevated version. We can absolutely cater to the full glam clients as well, but this is just what we are known for. Our Hair stylists are also very versatile artists. We can do anything from boho hairstyles to glam waves.
One of the things about my company that I am most proud of, is that I have a group of women that not only listen to the client but really take pride in what they do. All of our artists want you to love the way you look. There are so many artists out there that just do their job and leave, but we try to go above and beyond and try to help with the getting ready process as best we can.
I absolutely love working weddings because it brings people together from all over the world to celebrate two people in love. I have met so many wonderful people and I love hearing other people’s stories. Making someone that you just met for the first time feel beautiful and confident is a really amazing feeling. You leave a mark on that person, and they will always remember how you made them feel.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I have learned so many things about this business that I wish I would have known before. Something that is really important when starting in this business, or any business really, is that you cannot have a huge ego. You can absolutely be confident in your skill set but having a positive attitude and being easy to work with is a really big deal. You can turn off so many clients or other artists by either having a bad attitude or thinking that your opinion is the only one that matters. In this industry, the best way to get work is by referrals not only from clients but also from artists. If artists trust that you are a good person and you’re talented they will send you more work.

Something else that not many people talk about is how physical this job is. There is a lot of standing for hours at a time and a lot of repetitive movement. It’s important that you take care of your body by strengthening your shoulders, core, and back muscles so you won’t be in so much pain at the end of the day. When I first started, I used to wear heels and now I make sure I am wearing a comfy pair of shoes or else my body hurts at the end of the day. I did develop tendinitis in my shoulder from the repetitive movement so getting into physical therapy if you start feeling any sort of pain is a must.

The last thing that I would like to add that nobody teaches you in school is taxes. As a self-employed person, taxes can be pretty confusing, especially if you have contractors. Finding a knowledgeable tax preparer is key in keeping your business successful. Paying quarterly is really helpful so you don’t have a huge bill at the end of the year.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I have definitely felt overwhelmed more than once and there are different strategies for different days. I usually just start by taking a pause and doing a couple of deep breaths. I like to do guided meditations on YouTube, so I will look up like anxiety guided meditation or a focus meditation. A lot of times ideas will come into my head while I am meditating that help with the issue.
Sometimes I will just sit in the sun or go for a walk if I’m really overwhelmed, and I just have to step away.
Making a priority list of what absolutely has to get done first also helps and not doing anything else but what’s on that list.
Coffee helps me focus, but I know for some people with anxiety it’s not helpful, so when you feel really anxious or overwhelmed drinking a chamomile tea is great. Chamomile contains an antioxidant that helps you relax.
Turning on the Focus Music playlist on Apple is super helpful for me. When I listen to songs with lyrics, I get distracted. Putting my phone on Do Not disturb when I really have to work also helps.
Hiring people that you trust is really important. Having people that you can trust and that you can delegate tasks to is the best thing you can do for your business. There is a little bit of control that you need to release to be more efficient.
