We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Maze Overlay. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Maze below.
Maze, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I feel like that’s a default setting for me. Probably comes from my childhood. I watched my pops work so hard in the 90’s, and my mom was always cleaning and cooking, and taking care of me and my little sister. I always saw them working. We didn’t have too much down time. Also, the failures I had and the losses I had to take inspired me to go harder and never stop. I have a healthy fear of the “comfort zone”. I’m never too good to grow. I genuinely want to see how good I can get, and I believe hard work and dedication is the only way to see that growth.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Music. Art. Culture. Life. So much of what I do is personal and reflective, and so much is idealistic and prolific. From the darkest nights to the brightest days, the music, and the artwork represents all of it. The ups and the downs, the struggles, the triumphs, and everything we go through. I’m really focused on expanding the brand and bringing my art to more people all over the world. So there is a huge emphasis in marketing right now. Also, high quality physical mediums like vinyl, cassette, and other merchandise is one of my main areas of interest. We really enjoy bringing these things to the fans and supporters. The brand is connoisseur, and niche, but it’s also relatable and grounded. Balance.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Patience, resilience, and hard work. Taking the first step is key. NEVER giving up is essential. Putting in the hours it takes is priceless. Nobody will work harder for you than yourself. It wont EVER happen overnight. It is important to stay focused and learn to deal with the losses and hard times so that we grow and become greater. You will win! Just don’t let up. I listen to Kobe everyday. When everyone else is partying, go work. It pays off.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I know what I’m great at, and i know what I’m not great at. I enjoy being a well rounded individual, but when it comes to the art and the music, and specifically the business, I think its best to bring in experts who specialize in whatever you need done. Definitely know a little so you can delegate and converse about certain fields or interest, but leave it to the experts when it comes time to execute. Some people are multi talented, others only have one talent or skill. Either way, embrace it. I invest in other artists to help me create my vision. Then I invest in the business side to see the results in real life. I’m able to wear a few hats, but personally I just wanna make the music.
