Meet Amanda Yamate

We recently connected with Amanda Yamate and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Amanda with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Growing up, I was an elite athlete. My whole life I was competing in the thriving southern california volleyball scene and had the pleasure of playing alongside some of the best athletes in the world. I went on to get a full ride scholarship to play at an NCAA Division I college. Through these experiences I got to work with some of the most decorated and inspiring coaches who taught us how to dig deep and realize our full potentials on and off the court. The lessons those coaches passed on and the desire to always be on your best game have really stuck with me past my volleyball years.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a composer for film and TV. I get to work with directors and provide original music to help fulfill their visions and tell their stories as best I can. That’s the most exciting part about my job, getting to be on a team of incredibly talented visionaries and to be a part of making those visions come to life. Since each film is different I’m always getting to dive into new genres of music and work with some of the most talented musicians in Los Angeles.

This past year I co scored Do Revenge and You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah! with Este Haim. On my own I scored Every Body, a documentary following the lives of three intersex adults in the US.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three things that helped me on my journey were persistence, passion, and good communication. For folks just starting their own journeys, I think keeping all three of these qualities alive within me helped me create a good foundation for long term happiness in this field! Persistence and not giving up are totally underrated. It truly goes so far. Passion is necessary to nourish inspiration and interested in what I’m writing day to day. Good communication is the foundation for great working relationships to thrive!

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
I love working with directors who are looking to create something truly original. It’s exciting when a director welcomes the idea of taking a huge swing at the creative to do something unexpected and push the boundaries of filmmaking and what score can be. Even better when I get to work with people who are using their skills to tell a story that is uplifting underrepresented voices. Meld those two things together and I think that would be an ideal person to work with!
