We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Melody Lomboy-Lowe. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Melody below.
Melody, thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
I think that my generosity probably is rooted from my personal experience during childhood. I battled cancer for 3 years and during that time I received an outpouring of support. Family and friends rallied together to support my family. We had a beautiful community that not only helped with the day to day needs of a family, they helped emotionally as well. I am forever grateful for all of the people that helped me. Cancer affects the patient, but it also impacts family and friends and I think that by being helpful to others, the also help ourselves.
The challenges of childhood cancer that I faced shaped my resilience and the community that embaraced be shaped my generosity. Compassion and generosity can have a huge impact someone’s life. I am grateful for the kindness and assistance I received during those difficult times, I’ve made it my life’s mission to pay it forward. Through Luna Peak Foundation we hope to create a positive ripple effect by providing support, encouragement, and resources to those facing similar adversities. I truly believe that by sharing our stories, we can help those that are going through similar challenges.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I co-founded the nonprofit Luna Peak Foundation to support the cancer community. Luna Peak Foundation creates books and products that inspire and celebrate life. I encourage cancer survivors to share their experiences with newly diagnosed patients. Elevating the stories of survivors in the cancer and grief communities through books, courses, resources and support.
I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at age six and was given a 50% chance of survival.I was a survivor at a time when not many survived. I concentrate on helping newly diagnosed cancer patients, however Luna Peak Foundation supports cancer patients from diagnosis, thriving, and survivorship.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three elements were impactful in my creating Luna Peak Foundation. Resilence, positivity and experience.
Resilience is key when fighting cancer as it is for starting a nonprofit. The ability to bounce back from setbacks has only helped our endeavors.
Positivity has been a huge part of my life. Being faced with death at a young age I had many choices of how to react. I had a incredbile doctor that taught me the art of positivity. Having a positive mindset allowed me to heal both emotionally and physically. I promote positive thinking in all aspects of my life and for the cancer community that I serve.
Experience is simply the fact that being a cancer survivor validates my place in the cancer community. There is something very special about survivors meeting up. There is an instant sense of family, they know about you and they know that your going through. I use my experiences to help others.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The book I created, “Beyond Remission: words of advice for thriving” is the book. I wish that I had when I was first diagnosed. We interviewed and photographed over 100 cancer survivors and had them offer advice to newly diagnosed patients. We have donated over 2000 books to those that will benefit from its contents. This is the first book of many that we have created to uplift the survivor community.
Seeing the faces and eyes of survivors next to their advice was impactful, even for me as I created it. This book shows you what life after cancer can look like. It is inspiring and promotes positivity.
