Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sean Grant. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Sean, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
It was a long journey but the shortest answer is through relationship with God. How God defines purpose is service. When I started comedy I thought the desire was to be a rich and powerful comedian. But this is fruitless. God doesn’t put us here to be served but when your gift serves many then your name is made great which won’t matter to you because you’ll love to exalt God’s name as the reason. I know my material makes it hard to believe I love God but I truly do. 😅
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’ve been a live performer my entire adult life. I started in standup comedy through which I have been honored to perform at Jimmy Kimmel Live! Laff Tracks on Tru TV, Comedy Central & Don’t Tell Comedy. I was named a JFL New Face in 2019 and a Top Ten Comic To Watch by Timeout LA in 2020. I have landed guest roles on Meet the Browns, Maron on IFC, WTf Baron Davis and national commercial spots as well.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. The skill to suck with intention. Allow yourself to be bad when you start but don’t get comfortable there…focus on improving where you can.
2. Nerd out. If you love comedy read its history, listen to your faves interview and watch all the specials you can so you can realize what your take is adding to this ongoing conversation.
3. Respect the stage and your fellow comedians. Comedians are far more important to career and development than the in and out comedic industry people, so do your best to keep those relationships healthy.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
Oh man, life is life-ing but career wise I am challenged with completing a semi-autobiograpgical guide book. This makes me nervous excited horrified and joyful all at the same time. God bless you all at this publication for your writing through which you provide so much joy to the arts community.
