We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Windsor Dalton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Windsor, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I think this is one of the hardest aspects when you’re working for yourself and trying to build a brand. Especially in the creative world. Now more than ever with social media and access to the internet, there are so many people to compare yourself against. But, I feel that being creative is kind of a priceless skill – something that can never be exactly replicated and when I have feelings of “imposter syndrome” I try to just throw myself into my work even more. So to answer your question, I don’t think I or anyone really overcomes it. Life and business is relative, so something I feel confident in now I may have not felt confident in five years ago. But, today there are still challenges and ideas that feel overwhelming and that I’m unsure about. I think as long as you are giving your all and pushing for your best work, that’s all you can do in life.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
What I love about the design world is how expansive it is… AND that everyone needs furniture, decor, tableware etc. From the time I was a little kid, I would decorate anything and everything I could. Holidays, table scapes, my room, anything. I loved using my hands and mind to create a space that evoked a new feeling. I now do virtual and in-person designs for residential clients, I have an e-commerce website that I fill with some of my favorite home decor items, and I work with brands on social media to spread the word about products or lines that I love in my own home.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think some of the best advice I’ve been given is to never give up, never be the smartest person in the room, and to be kind to everyone.
If you’re early in your journey, I would give the same advise that I was given and I would say to just go for it. I think people are always waiting for the right moment. “Once I’ve graduated, or gotten 10k followers” or whatever it is. I say just go for it today.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I get overwhelmed, I clean and organize. I think when your office, home or even your closet is clean and organized you have more room for your thoughts. It takes away physical clutter so the mental clutter isn’t so overbearing.
