We caught up with the brilliant and insightful NICOLAS HOSPITAEL a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
NICOLAS, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
For me, the key to maintaining creativity lies in consistently stepping out of my comfort zone. I mix things up by trying out new activities such as swimming and getting into morning meditations and visualizations. I also train my curiosity by actively conversing with people, and delving into self-development content keeps my mind agile and receptive to diverse perspectives. The most impactful exercise for me remains improv classes. It trains me to stay sharp and creative on the spot. In addition to that, reading books, staying informed through industry trades, and immersing myself in audiobooks contribute not only to my knowledge base but also to spark off fresh ideas. And you know what? Something as simple as binge-watching movies and TV series in my field! That’s my guilty pleasure for both fun and creative inspiration. It’s all about keeping things lively!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am an actor living in Los Angeles. I started acting in 2017 in France and after a year of learning the craft, I decided to move to the capital of movie Entertainment… L.A! I believe that acting might be the most humanly rewarding type of job in terms of life experience. You experience life to its truest form through your very own essence. When I act it is like stepping into a whole new world every time I take on a different project. I believe that the most rewarding aspect of acting is “feeling”. You get to feel any emotion/feelings you set your character to feel.
I am currently at a stage in my career where I need to change agent but I think this time I would love to find a manager to can guide my career first. So I am openly throwing this bottle into the “sea”.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Firstly, I would say emotional intelligence. I deeply believe that acting is an art that requires a deep understanding of human emotions and behavior. An actor with high emotional intelligence can connect with characters on a profound level, effectively conveying a wide range of emotions. This skill helps in building empathy with characters and allows the audience to connect with the performances on a deeper, more emotional level. Secondly, continuous learning/practicing and adaptability. Adapting to a constantly changing industry, learning and training new skills, accents, or acting techniques. The entertainment industry is very dynamic, and to me, an actor needs to understand this truth to be successful.
Finally, I would say reading the trades. An actor needs to stay informed about his industry. The entertainment industry is also constantly changing. We experienced it in 2023 with the WGA/SAG-AFTRA successive strikes.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents are a great source of inspiration to me. They’ve always been supporting my dream from the start. When I was changing the course of my life to become a professional actor on the opposite side of the globe, their encouragement gave me strength. They are not just spectators on the sidelines but active participants in this shared endeavor, contributing to the person and artist I am becoming.
