Meet Kalmplex

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kalmplex . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kalmplex below.

Hi Kalmplex , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from my faith in The Most High. My heritage is of Jamaican and Ghanaian background while being born and raised in Toronto. The aspect of The Most High was always in the home instilled in me from my mother and father. I was put here to do great things and although things don’t always work out or at least not how I may have envisioned them The Most High still has my back. As long as I’m alive there’s still time to shine and that’s what I’m gonna do.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Im a multimedia visual artist who’s been documenting art and culture independently in Toronto Canada for over 2 decades. From artshows, concerts, lectures after club night conversations you name it I’ve been there recording with my camera. Recently I was the recipient of an artist residency sponsored by the city of Toronto (@cityofto) thru Uma Nota Culture (@umanotaculture, https://www.umanota.ca) where I have a studio space out of a shipping container located at 62 Geary ave at All Ours Studios (@alloursstudios). Art Vessel Projects (@artvesselprojects, https://www.artvesselprojects.ca) allows me to create my works as well as showcase my paintings in a gallery/studio setting. I’m also very much into healthy living as I ride my bike all year round and I haven’t eaten meat in over 28yrs. I’ve created Kalmplex Snax (@kalmplexsnax) which are dehydrated spicy fruit. I use tropical fruit and make them into snax you can eat on the go using spices that help with immune boosting, fibre and inflammation.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Trust your gut, believe in yourself and have faith in the creator to get you through the hard times. If you have a vision for yourself keep believing in what you’re doing. Not everyone is gonna overstand what your mission is but the seed wasn’t planted in them for the works you need to create.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
I would be gardening and making as much of a positive impact on this world so that when I’m gone I leave behind an imprint that future generations can look at as a source of inspiration. Currently working on getting funding/resources to create the documentary on Toronto that I’ve been building for over 20yrs. I’ve applied for grants and such to know avail however I won’t let that stop me as I know as well as others do that the history that I have is unlike anyone in my city. I’m known for being at 4/5 places in a night so I have a plethora of history and an insight into the way things were like no other. Completion of that project as well as others such as coffee table photo books, paintings displayed in international galleries/settings and leading a happy, healthy life will be what I’ve done. In 10 yrs I will have travelled and swam in warm tropical oceans, had various solo and group art showcases, livened up peoples tastebuds with my spicy snax and continued to be a ray of sunshine in the world. As well as learned about diverse ways of building environmentally friendly, self sustainable housing so that a healing artistic homestead with a sauna, steam room and tropical garden was built where my loved ones  and friends had amazing gatherings with like minded people. Most importantly being a source of joy for my family and friends as we navigated how to make this world a better place one person at a time while building with community to help sustain Mother Earth.
