We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Salomé Robert-Murphy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Salomé below.
Salomé, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I let go of any imposter syndrome when I realised It doesn’t serve me. If a casting director is interested in me, I trust in them and their expertise. Likewise, I trust in them if they decide something is not meant for me. I have spent way too much time overthinking auditions and whether I think I’m good enough for new opportunities, and it only got in my way. It’s not my job to decide what I think I am or am not right for. My job is to be myself and show off my training. Also, the audition process is usually drawn out and meticulous, so when it goes my way I know that I’ve worked hard and allow myself to feel deserving and excited about what’s next.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a method trained actor, I trained at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute during my time at Tisch School of the Arts. The learning process was so intense and emotionally labouring, but incredibly rewarding. My training has given me the ability to whole-heartedly delve into every new character I play. I connect with them on a profound level which helps me to release any prejudice or stereotype that has been attached to the character or that I myself may initially observe about them. My job is tell a story. As a film and theatre fanatic first, I appreciate the power of story telling in making people feel and connect, and I strive to do the best I can to help create that effect.
Currently, I’m in production for an independent short film called ‘I Think She Did It’. I play the role of Callie, a confusedly accused woman trying to get people see her side of the story. I can’t reveal much yet but the film is set to hit the the festival circuit in the spring!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1) Confidence
I definitely faked it til I made it on this one, but I would have let so many chances slip away if I hadn’t pushed myself to go in for something I didn’t know if I was ready for yet, or reached out to somebody I wanted to network with that I felt was above me.
2) Thick Skin
Being able to brush off rejection is absolutely one of the most important traits you need to develop as someone in the arts. Taking rejection personally is not going to help anything. There are a million reasons you might miss out on a role you thought you were perfect for. You just have to move on to the next.
3) Passion
You need to know that there’s nothing else you’d rather do to be able to stick with all the ups and downs. Most of my old classmates have changed courses in their career if they weren’t completely positive acting was their biggest strength. I adore what I do, so it excites me to keep going and continue improving on my training.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My agents. Andrew and Lisa over at The Price Group plucked me out fresh out of college and have been by my side every step of my professional career. They truly believe in me and I fully trust in them. They always give me feedback on how to improve and celebrate every small victory and accomplishment. Knowing that they see something special in me has definitely made me more resilient. I’ll always cherish everything they have taught me.
I also of course feel the same way about my commercial and modelling agency, Bicoastal Management. They make sure I’m always feeling 100% with my skill level and have shared so much with me about the industry. My agents keep me confident as I know they’ve got my back.
