Meet Coco Love

We recently connected with Coco Love and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Coco , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Now that I think about it, it’s crazy that I’m even still in those type of situations because it’s 2023. You are right though, I don’t see a lot of Black female video directors. I learned to use it to my advantage. The Leo in loves it. I learned a long time ago that people fear what they don’t know and that actually gets my gears turning. I learned to put my “Big Girl Pants” on and walk in the room like God sent me there because he did. I tell myself that my name was floating in these rooms before I even go here. So, that helps me walk into the room with confidence and my head held high. I learned to have all my ducks in a row and never to take the short end of the stick. I’d never do anything that jeopardizes my integrity. I was raised by a really strong black woman in a time when she was the only black female nurse on the unit. She always did it with such grace and pose. I wanted to be that.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m nervous but I don’t let them see me sweat. The most important thing I think I learned was that I’m really really good at what I do and that my work speaks for itself. Also, that you want to be in the rooms where you are different. You have to stand out in order to stand up. I had to get to that level of confidence. I knew my videos were risky because music videos don’t look like what I shoot anymore but what I shoot is art. Art is universal. I remember my reason and that fuels my drive. That made me successful. You have to remember your reason and that your gift shall make way for you. Pair that with hard work and your cooking with grease. That’s how you remain effective and successful.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
For those of you who don’t know, I’m Director Coco Love and I’m a film director. Best job ever. I love to create. I love being creative. It’s how I express myself, it’s my therapy. I’ve been in the film industry literally my whole life. I was a gerber baby. But only 7 years ago did I decide to be behind the camera. I found my place when I did that. That was the best move I ever made was picking up that camera. Now I run a team of 6 people and an entire production company with my husband. We’ve shot over 700 projects. Music videos, commercials, weddings, events and anything dealing with digital marketing my team does. I have team with a collaboration of over 14 years experience. We are all experts in our field and love what we do. I have an amazing team. But we’ve been in business for over 7 years. That’s crazy that I can actually say that out loud. Wow. It’s just the beginning though. We have some amazing projects coming this year. I can’t say in detail yet, but some films, some networks. When you see Bearhammer Productions, that’s us. This is going to be a big year for us.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The first would be to “never stop learning.” You can never be too good at what you do. Times are constantly evolving and it’s always so much to learn. I learned to create a circle of people who are where you want to be and stick with those guys. Again, that’s learning. Soak up as much knowledge and experience as you can. Offer anything you can to the circle and build relationships. That’s what this is about. It’s about relationships. You want your name in those rooms like we talked about earlier.

Most importantly, I learned to stay true to myself and what I came to do. Stay focused on what the purpose, what the mission is. As long as I remember my reason I will never lose my drive. I’ll continue to work hard and with anything you work hard at consistently will work. It’s impossible for it not too. It’s going to grow legs of it’s own. Just keep learning. Never lose your faith and drive.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Definitely, I am so open to collaborating. I want to collaborate with like minded individuals. Artist, Entrepreneurs, Business Owners and other Filmmakers. Just anyone who could use my services, which is a wide range of people or anyone in the film industry looking to collaborate on a project. You have to appreciate the arts though. Our company social media or email is best way to contact us. Tap that Contact button on any of our social media pages and you will speak to someone who can point you in the right direction to what you’re looking for. I’m almost positive, the company number and email is in that contact button. We’re Bearhammer Productions on every platform we’re on.
