Meet Shana Jobes

We recently connected with Shana Jobes and have shared our conversation below.

Shana, so great to have you with us today. There are so many topics we want to ask you about, but perhaps the one we can start with is burnout. How have you overcome or avoided burnout?
As a service- based small business owner and mom it’s really easy to get burnt out. When I first started out I would overwork myself by taking clients back-to-back with no break or days off. I would take calls and answer emails and messages at all times of the day and night. I hardly made time for myself, friends or family. Work consumed me, but I quickly learned that it’s important to have a balance and set boundaries.

What helps me prevent burnout is planning ahead, prioritizing self-care, making sure that I get adequate sleep and taking time off regularly.

Planning ahead and prepping for the week is essential. I find that if I prep for the week ahead, I am less likely to get overwhelmed with my busy schedule. I prioritize selfcare by making sure that I get at least 7 hours of sleep every night. I like to workout at least 3-5 days weekly. I try to make sure that I am eating regularly, even if it’s just a quick snack in between clients. I also make sure that I take time off to enjoy life, family and friends. I also only respond to clients and customers during regular business hours if it’s not urgent.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a lash and brow artist of 5.5 years. I am an Instructor, and I am a mentor. I am also the proud owner of Eye Candy Beauty Studio in Baltimore, MD.

I’ve always had a passion for all things beauty for as long as I can remember, but I didn’t always take it seriously. I thought I wanted to have a career in the field of Social Work, so I went to school and received my bachelor’s degree.

It wasn’t until 2017 that I discovered my passion for lash extensions and brows in 2018. I just loved how getting these services done enhanced my look and made me feel. I could relax and leave feeling and looking like a new woman. After I took my first course, I practiced, researched and studied consistently to improve. I’m naturally an introvert but I knew that in order for me to grow I had to step outside my comfort zone and put myself out there. By 2018 I had built up the courage to pursue lashing as a career full-time and continue to do so. I’ve invested in courses to further my knowledge and I’ve been able to network and connect with many people. I’ve maintained a loyal and consistent clientele- which continues to grow. I’ve taught and mentored students. I’ve been able to open my own lash and brow studio and have been able to grow in ways that I’ve never imagined.

I’m really passionate about what I do. I love connecting with like-minded individuals and love making women feel beautiful and confident. I really love being able to share my knowledge and skills through teaching and mentoring other aspiring lash and brow artists. I love being able to inspire people to bet on themselves- to have faith and to just take chances.

There’s something special about being able to being able to wake up and get paid to do what you love.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, 3 qualities that were most impactful in my journey are resiliency. consistency, and faith to trust the process.

Resiliency is important because it won’t be easy. There are going to be tough times. You won’t be able to control the outcome of certain situations but having the ability to recover quickly or adapt when things don’t go as planned will be helpful. It’s important to view these challenges as lessons. Learn from your challenges and use them as opportunities to improve. I really think it’s important to focus on things you can control instead of dwelling on things that you can’t change.

Consistency is important not just in business but in all aspects of life. It builds confidence. The more you do something- the better you get at it. Goals require consistent effort. Consistency is what helps keep you motivated.

It’s important to have faith. There may be times where people may doubt you. People may not support you or believe in you. You may even begin to doubt yourself. But having faith, thinking positively, putting in the work and believing in yourself is what will help to keep you going. You really have to trust the process.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I’m feeling overwhelmed it really depends on the situation- sometimes I try to just push through. It also helps to take a moment to pause and breathe or listen to something positive. Talking to someone that you can trust helps. Even journaling can help get you through moments of feeling overwhelmed. It also helps to have something planned that you enjoy; maybe a self-care day or spending time with friends or a loved one.
