Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mayson Honek. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mayson, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Overtime, I’ve developed my self-esteem by creating art that represents me and my ADHD brain, i knew not everyones going to like my work but i do. I kept going on with how i liked it and kept practicing to get where i want to be.
Recently I’ve gained more knowledge, practice, and confidence to reach out to bigger venues and people, I kept thinking to myself “the worst they could say was no.” I think that built my confidence alot and it got me to where i am today.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Hello! My name is Mayson Honek. I am a 21 year old, DIY Photographer and editor of MaysonHphotography, A business located in Seattle and Bremerton Washington. I started my Concert and Portrait portfolio in 2021 with this year being the 2nd becoming the 3rd year of my career and journey. The goal of my Art is to capture photos that make you feel the emotions you would feel if you were at the event. I have recently started to expand with a website on the way with options to book portraits, weddings and Band photos as well as my photos. In 2023 I started a local Videography project called “Phone Rings” that show local venues and scenes around the area that deserve more recognition. (Go check them out!)
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back to the qualities, skills or areas of my knowledge came from having an open mind. When going into a skill that has so much variety, you have to understand to not understand sometimes. Be present in the moment of meeting all different types of beautiful people and the atmospheres that come along with the journey. As the beginners reading this, i want to give advice and share that in the beginning of your journey no matter what it is… don’t compare yourself to others. I understand Its a hard thing to not do. Even through there are people out there with better equipment and better knowledge, Does not mean your work is bad. Stay consistent with yourself and know that no matter what you have, you are an amazing artist to someone else. Keep going! Also, don’t spend all of your savings on equipment, Work with what you got first.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
My challenge at the moment is to stay consistent with my art. Because of personal life, global issues and other factors, it does get challenging to balance all things at once. Unfortunately i think most of us are in the same boat. Recently I’ve been trying to learn that it is okay to take little breaks because if you dont, you can get stressed and burnt out fast.
