We recently connected with Tiesha Williams and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tiesha, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I developed my confidence and self-esteem through the women in my family speaking life and affirmation into me from a very young age, more specifically my Aunt Sherry. She nicknamed me Buddha Doll and The Beautiful One when I was about a year old because people would always stop my mom and tell her I looked like a doll. My Aunt would make me look into the mirror and repeat things like “I am so beautiful”, “I am amazing”, “I am so talented” etc., so constantly hearing that and saying those things over and over while looking into my own eyes in the mirror, it built my confidence and self esteem tremendously!
Now that I am an adult and reflect on all that I have been through and had to overcome in life, I realize it wasn’t just about teaching me that I am “a pretty girl”, those affirmations helped me develop self worth, a strong and unshakeable sense of self, and a love for myself that I would later in life pull from to propel me forward and give me the audacity to know I can achieve whatever I want in this life. That self esteem and confidence also lent itself to me being assertive and decisive and being able to make decisions for myself at a very young age without needing validation from others.
I know that I would not have been able to overcome the obstacles I’ve faced and be a successful human being without the amount of confidence and self esteem that was instilled in me from the very beginning of my life. Thank you to my Aunt Sherry for being the main reason I became the BOSS B that I am today!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a professional Makeup Artist, with 17 years of experience in Beauty. I do makeup and male grooming for TV, Film, Print, Bridal and special occasions. I have worked with Disney, Dove Cameron, Lizzo, Dwyane Wade, Taye Diggs, and Bill Bellamy to name a few.
I have loved makeup and all things Beauty since I was a little girl. I had no idea I would be able to make a living doing something that I am naturally good at and truly love doing. The most special part of what I do is being able to take my clients to an elevated version of themselves through my service. My favorite part is seeing the look on my clients’ face when they look in the mirror to see the end result and I can visibly see their confidence come to life. Everytime I see that look I know I’ve done my job and I’ve done it well.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Being that I am a self taught Makeup Artist, I believe Art being a natural gift of mine, the ability to talk to people and make them feel comfortable in my presence and an entrepreneurial spirit, are the 3 most important qualities that have positively impacted my journey. The beauty industry is not an easy industry to navigate being that it is a Creative job which most would not deem Makeup Artistry as a “real job”. In order to be successful in this business (and any business), you must be a self starter and truly have an entrepreneurial spirit. It takes real hustle, building genuine connections and community and being able to perform well in what you do.
The best advice I can give anyone who is early in their journey of whatever they are pursuing is to first get clear on your why. Why are you doing what you’ve chosen to do? Once you’re clear on your why, dive in and give it all you’ve got! Practice and master your craft, take classes and workshops, go to events within your niche to meet other people who are doing the same thing to create your community and meet people, utilize social media to market yourself to your ideal audience and clientele, and ask for what you want. YOU WILL HEAR NO sometimes, a lot actually. Be prepared for that, but let that drive you because all it takes is that one right yes in order for you to take off! Keep going every single day and keep putting one foot in front of the other because you’ll eventually reach your goals and destination.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed that is a key indicator that I need to stop, take a break, and reassess. I ask myself questions like, “What is the root of why I’m feeling overwhelmed?”, ” At what point did I start feeling overwhelmed?”. I then look at what I currently have on my plate and determine what I can eliminate. If there isn’t anything that I can eliminate, I pivot into strategy mode and order tasks by level of importance. I also remind myself that whatever is overwhelming me is not life or death and there is a solution for almost everything.
Shifting my mindset into a calm, “one thing at a time” state, truly helps to alleviate overwhelm and stress.
Most importantly and above all, feeling overwhelmed is my biggest indicator that I need to tap in with my Higher Power, Jesus Christ. When I am connected to my Higher Power I feel the most relaxed, organized and calm. Circling back to God and making it a priority to get recentered around Him is the biggest and best remedy to overwhelm.
