Meet Jenna Levine Liu

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jenna Levine Liu. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jenna below.

Jenna, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
Having a job that demands constant creativity can be challenging. Although I’d call myself ‘hyper-creative,’ even I have days and weeks when coming up with content is a slog at best and trying to knock down a brick wall with a wiffle ball bat at worst.

People often ask me how I create so much content so frequently. Being creative takes practice! For Sixx Cool Moms communities to sustain themselves through advertising, my team needs to produce a comparable amount of content so that members aren’t inundated with pure advertisements in their Facebook feed. I also recognize the importance of quality content; it receives more engagement, and more engagement means our posts show up in more newsfeeds, resulting in more of our advertisers’ content appearing in member newsfeeds as well.

What I do is an art form guided by analytics, and I don’t expect the average social media business to replicate my method. The Sixx Cool Moms approach is specifically designed to boost engagement in advertising.

When I started creating content on Facebook, I spent time trying to open my eyes and mind to the world around me. Upon entering a room, my brain scans for content. It’s not merely about observing an ugly lamp and talking about it; it’s about noticing that the lamp resembles something from the ’60s, sparking an idea about motherhood in the ’60s versus today.

I always carry a notebook to jot down the core idea. Later, when I return home, I conduct a quick Google search on these differences in motherhood, resulting in a solid post idea.

The point is, if you start training your brain to be aware of your surroundings, you’ll notice a wealth of interesting observational content at your fingertips.

Perhaps you’re a therapist and you notice someone looking sad. They don’t necessarily need to be sad; your brain is making connections! It’s getting cold, so it might be a good time for a post on seasonal affective disorder.

Or maybe you’re a professional organizer, and you see a teenager in shorts in 40-degree weather. This could be an opportunity to post tips for successfully transitioning your wardrobe from summer to winter.

Regardless of your industry, you can ignite a creative spark just by paying attention to the world around you.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My journey began with the exciting news of expecting my daughter, Poppy, now four years old. Recognizing the need for a genuine support network of local mom friends, I delved into local Facebook groups, only to find none that truly resonated with me. There is a lot of judgement out there in the mom space, and I was having none of it!

Fueled by the desire for a unique, funny, and honest space, I created a group that quickly gained traction, rooted in my humorous content exploring the challenges of motherhood. What started authentically as a way for me to make friends evolved unexpectedly into a profitable venture as members sought advertising opportunities to reach our growing membership base.

Drawing on my 12 years of media advertising experience, I initially supported local businesses by providing copy and promotions for free. As demand soared, I transitioned to a fee-based model, ultimately founding Sixx Cool Moms as a nationwide phenomenon. My “aha” moment struck when I realized the vast advertising potential in expanding beyond a single chapter.

Officially launching in March 2020, just before the pandemic hit, Sixx Cool Moms became a sanctuary for moms navigating the unique challenges of 2020 and 2021. Starting as a 500-member chapter, it blossomed into 47 chapters across 13 states, boasting a community of 110,000 Cool Moms. Beyond our thriving Facebook communities, we now offer in-person events, retreats, workshops, and business development opportunities for mothers nationwide.

For advertisers, we’ve revolutionized influencer marketing, adopting a community-driven approach that sparks word-of-mouth, with our members enthusiastically carrying the torch. This model not only supports local businesses but also fosters reciprocity with exclusive deals and discounts for our members.

You can also be part of the movement by starting your own Sixx Cool Moms chapter in your local geographic area via our licensing model!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, I consider adaptability, entrepreneurial spirit, and my talent for community building as the most impactful qualities.

Adaptability has been a key aspect of my entrepreneurial journey right from the beginning. I fostered a mindset that welcomes new experiences and sees challenges as opportunities for growth. I’m consistently learning, adjusting plans based on changing circumstances, and actively listening to constructive feedback from colleagues and peers. This commitment to adaptability has played a pivotal role in my ongoing development as an entrepreneur. It also keeps my ego in check!

Entrepreneurial Spirit: I flexed my entrepreneurial muscles by spotting the advertising potential within my Facebook group and turning it into a money-making venture. What started as a single chapter soon blossomed into a nationwide network of multiple chapters, broadening my vision and impact. I had to be willing to take the risk and dive headfirst into my idea.

Community Building and Networking: My innate ability to build and nurture communities, both in the digital realm and face-to-face, played a pivotal role in the success of my venture. Leveraging my network, I seized advertising opportunities, creating a supportive haven for mothers nationwide. Additionally, I empowered others to embark on their entrepreneurial journeys as well!

For those kicking off their journey, it’s vital to carve out clear goals, delineating both short-term and long-term objectives for a roadmap. You can’t get to where you want without a destination in mind! Having a definite direction is crucial, but what’s equally important is embracing adaptability. Being open to change and adjusting plans based on evolving circumstances is the secret sauce that enhances resilience.

On top of having a solid plan, I highly suggest diving into networking and seeking mentorship as part of your journey. Building relationships in person adds immense value to your business, not just in terms of connections but also broadening your perspective and growing your social circle.

Finally, cherishing those small wins, regardless of their size, is vital for maintaining motivation and acknowledging progress along the journey. Similarly, it’s important to approach mistakes with a sense of humor, learning from them while also finding the absurdity in the entrepreneurial experience.

Being able to laugh at the challenges and unpredictabilities of entrepreneurship is not just a coping mechanism but a valuable mindset that helps navigate the ups and downs with resilience and a positive outlook. After all, humor can be a powerful ally in the entrepreneurial adventure and life in general!

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
If I start feeling overwhelmed, it’s usually because I’m spending too much time on social media scrolling, and not being productive with actual work. One challenge of having a job centered around social media is the tendency to get caught in a cycle of social media addiction.

When I find myself entering social media addiction cycles, I take the following steps to reset:

I plug my phone in downstairs in the kitchen when I head upstairs for the night, and I refrain from looking at it again until I’ve been awake for at least an hour the next morning.

I meditate for 5-10 minutes first thing in the morning to clear my head and start the day in the right mindset.

I create my content outside of the social media platform I’m drafting a post for (using a word document) and then transfer the content over when it’s time to post. If I start writing in the platform, I’m more likely to open a new tab, find something that sparks my interest, and lose focus for minutes or even hours.

I walk at least 30 minutes a day and do yoga 2-3 times per week. I also prioritize staying hydrated and consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables. When I take care of my mind and body, I can help fight off the easily addictive nature of social media and use the platforms to grow my business and not hinder it.

Despite my best efforts, there are some weeks when I falter in these practices, but I am patient with myself. Social media is designed to be addictive, and since it’s where my job resides, all I can do is my best and strive to improve every day.
