Meet Kaity Heart

We were lucky to catch up with Kaity Heart recently and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Kaity with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Work ethic is a funny thing isn’t it? For some people it’s just bred into you, and I guess that’s true for me. From a very young age I’ve always felt an incredible drive to do the most, be the best, work hard, conquer all….but never really understood why. But now I realize that it really boils down to two things: hard work determines how lucky you are and if you are the best at whatever you do (whether thats collecting trash, buying stocks, or singing) you are irreplaceable.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I have been singing my entire life, and have been lucky enough (and by lucky-I mean I worked my a*s off) to make it my career. I’m able to sing all over the country (Nashville, Chicago, LA, beautiful islands in the sun), perform in amazing places (The Kennedy Center, Roy Wilkins Auditorium, The Fillmore) and work and sing with people I never dreamed of…more on that later.

I’m most excited about the original band that I’m in-an irreverent 1970’s original band called Sunflower Fox and the Chicken Leg. And although we don’t take ourselves very seriously-we take our music, how we record and the people we work with-with the utmost respect.

‘There are three elements missing in society: Olympia beer, shag carpeting you can’t possibly vacuum and unpasteurized rock and roll. Sunflower Fox and the Chicken Leg believe this is contributing to the fall of mankind, and intend to change this. They have made it their mission to visit as many iconic studios in this great land as to bring back the magic of real studio recordings. They want to bring back the glory of the 1970s rock in the most exciting way possible. It’s the unholy love child that every rock fan has been waiting for.’

We are visiting iconic recording studios all over the country capture the magic of the 1970s with a team of people that respect this kind of music.

Ron Nevison has joined our ridiculous cavalcade of musicians to bring in his expertise from that very era from working with bands like: The Who, Rolling Stones, Bad Company and my personal favorite Heart.

We will be releasing our first full album/vinyl this spring and have all of our current singles on every streaming platform!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Networking: I know there are a lot of introverts crawling into their shells right now-but I’m telling you growing a network of real connections is so important. Really caring about people and developing real relationships that are mutually beneficial is so great! I have been using connections I’ve had for 15 years and we still give work to each other. So much of life is not what you know…but who you know. Walk into a room and have the attitude of ‘everyone in this room can do something for me, and I can do something for them…I don’t know what that is yet-but I’m gonna find out!’ It gives you a clear goal, it becomes a fun game and you can make tons of friends and business connections in one go!

Determination:
This is so hard. Being able to take criticism and keep your eye on the goal is always a tough one. And the entertainment world is unforgiving. Knowing your ‘why’ is so important. Why am I doing this? Why am I in this job? Why does this benefit me? If you don’t know your why-being determined is next to impossible. It will be easy to be dragged down with every negative comment, and every bad performance. Understand why you do what you do! Remember why you chose this in the first place!

Enthusiasm:
Unbridled enthusiasm is what keeps me going. I get excited about everything. Everything is a new opportunity for something amazing. My band is so used to me jumping up and screaming when I like something that they do they all wince when they do something good. Hahaha but it always ends in laughter and excitement. It’s something that just catches on and keeps going. Find your enthusiasm for life and keep er’ going!

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
This is so easy.

How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie changed my life.

Making real honest connections, be a good listener, become genuinely interested in others…there are so many. It’s almost 100 years old, but it was ahead of it’s time.

Do yourself a favor and read this book. Then reread it. And read it every year after!
