We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hallie Driskell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hallie, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
The best way I keep my creativity alive is to always look for art. I find art in everything in the trees, people, and sky. It’s very important to be creative as a fashion designer because you have to be able to create new ideas. I look at everything around me, analyze current trends, and create unique art from what I see when I go into the world. I always draw, on my iPad and on paper. Sketching out ideas creates a limitless space for creating. Also, collaborating with other designers and bouncing ideas off each other. Doing so can be a great source of inspiration. I love to share my ideas and my style because our styles can be completely different. Which helps me learn new techniques that can make my designs innovative. One way I keep creativity alive as a fashion designer is not putting limits on my inspiration. I find ideas in music, poems, and books. The most important way to stay in a creative and growing space is to practice. I always practice my craft, I try new techniques and improve on old ones.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am Hallie Maya Driskell, born in Honolulu Hawaii. I am a great, passionate, innovative fashion designer! My clothing line is called Hallie Maya Driskell Brand (HMD Brand) and I create amazing clothes for women who are fearless, creative, and who are not afraid to stand out. I think the most exciting part about being a fashion designer is seeing my designs being worn all around the world. My clothes are different, fresh and represent women who want to stand out and be the center of attention. HMD Brand is inspired by 2000’s video vixens style, and women who like to turn heads everywhere they go. I got into the fashion industry in college, I launched my very first collection in summer 2021, I sold handmade butterfly bikinis. Which the sells where great but I wanted to get more into designing clothes. So for my second launch I did a collaboration with SHEIN and my clothes I designed are being sold on the SHEIN website. Right now my clients and new customers can go purchase my full collection, only available on the SHEIN website!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, the three qualities that were most impactful in my journey was patience, self awareness, and grace. The reason why I chose the three qualities is because without patience in the fashion industry it will seem challenging. Patience is crucial for my creative process. As a designer, inspiration can’t be turned on, I face creative roadblocks and creating new fresh designs can be challenging when you have blocks. Self awareness is important because you have to know who you are and what you bring to table and never lower your standards. Grace is the most important skill to have, during my journey because you have to always give yourself grace. That is important in everything you do, don’t be too hard on yourself, everyone is learning and growing. The advice I would give folks that are early in their journey in developing the skills are don’t give up on your dreams. Don’t be too hard on yourself and create what you love and stay focused on your talents.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was let me be creative as a kid. I was able to express myself with the way I dress and hair. Growing up my mother, Valerie Driskell taught me everything I know about sewing and watching her being so creative gave me a love and admiration for fashion design. Watching my mother being creative in many different ways inspired me to dig deep into fashion, which started with me customizing my own clothes in high school to me launching my own clothing line. My father, Darrick Driskell always believed in my abilities and he supported my dreams for becoming a fashion designer.
