Meet Shirin Salamat

We recently connected with Shirin Salamat and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Shirin, so excited to have you with us today and we are really interested in hearing your thoughts about how folks can develop their empathy? In our experience, most folks want to be empathic towards others, but in a world where we are often only surrounded by people who are very similar to us, it can sometimes be a challenge to develop empathy for others who might not be as similar to us. Any thoughts or advice?

My sense of empathy and compassion was significantly shaped particularly beginning at the age of 17, when I embarked on a life-changing journey as a volunteer at a local orphanage. This orphanage was more than just a shelter; it was a place where the echoes of unspoken stories and the silent cries of abandoned children resounded. Witnessing infants, some as young as one month old, being left anonymously behind the orphanage door, I encountered the raw and often unseen face of human vulnerability. This heart-wrenching experience exposed me to the grim realities of those who start life at a disadvantage, with no family, security, or fair chances. The emotional impact of these experiences nurtured a deep-seated empathy within me, as I realized the immense hardships and injustices faced by these innocents.

As I spent more time at the orphanage, I profoundly understood the world’s inequalities and injustices. The daily interactions with the children, understanding their backgrounds, and witnessing their struggles firsthand, solidified my resolve to make a meaningful difference. I learned that empathy is not just about feeling for others, but also about recognizing the need for action to address the disparities in society. This realization was pivotal in shaping my life. It taught me that there are individuals in the world who are not afforded fair options or opportunities.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
First, learn how to be a team player and create your own team in business

In the realm of business, success is rarely a solo endeavor; it’s a collaborative effort. A well-rounded team brings diverse perspectives, skills, and strengths that you alone may not possess. Start by identifying the key areas where you need support and when selecting allies, look beyond their technical skills; consider their ability to collaborate, communicate, and contribute to a positive work culture.

Be honest with your clients, even if it is not in your favor

Honesty and integrity are the bedrock of a successful business, especially for an entrepreneur. In your interactions with clients, always prioritize transparency and honesty, even when the truth might not be in your immediate favor.

Help others excel in their career or business

Part of your success will come from helping others excel in their careers and businesses. Encourage your employees and colleagues to pursue their professional goals and offer them opportunities for growth and development. Remember, when you help others succeed, you build a community of professionals and entrepreneurs who can support each other, and in turn, contribute to your own success.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents never stood in front of my growth and always supported me in every endeavor. Their support coupled with their advice helped me make better choices in life.
