We were lucky to catch up with Rana Rose recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rana, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience is defined as the ability to withstand adversity and bounce back from difficult life events. In my lifetime, I have faced loss (death), homelessness, joblessness, and financial difficulties. With each life altering event, God has been my source. He has given me the strength, courage, and perseverance to keep pushing forward and overcome my challenges. I can’t take credit for developing resilience because if left to my own devices or my fleshly strength I would have given up the fight a long time ago.
As I’ve always stated, life is not a straight line. You will have “stops,” “detours,” “yields,” and “reverses” along the way. My faith and trust in God has allowed me to look at situations with a glass half full mentality. It can be a difficult feat to do that some days but I’m reminded that God has done so much for me thus far even when I didn’t deserve it. For this reason, I have been able to overcome some of the most heartwrenching or most difficult situations with God’s guldance.
There have been many chapters written of my life but I know God still has more work for me to do to complete my book. As long as he still has a purpose for me, I will continue to get back up whenever life throws a curveball because I know with God nothing is impossible.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Rana Rose, owner of Accounting with a Purpose, LLC located in the Dallas, TX area but serving clients across the US. I have been an Accounting professional for 30 years and hold a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and an MBA. During my corporate career, I have had the opportunity to work for small to medium-sized companies, publicly-traded to private companies, and government entities to nonprofit organizations. My last 10 years in corporate allowed me the opportunity to hone my accounting and budgeting experience with companies in the non-profit and local government sector ensuring fiscal responsibility while streamlining processes, increasing efficiency, and driving growth. Not to mention, I had the privilege of being the financial steward for budgets ranging from $10M to upwards of $280M. Due to the wealth of knowledge, education, and experience gained on my corporate journey, I decided to use my expertise by pivoting from corporate to becoming an entrepreneur.
My company Accounting with a Purpose, LLC helps small businesses financially invest in themselves by providing bookkeeping, income tax, and consulting services which can result in revenue growth and tax savings. The goal of my business is to ensure small businesses (including nonprofits) are successful by serving as a financial partner to provide financial guidance and education to equip them with the proper information to make sound business decisions.
As a result of following God’s roadmap set for me, I have been able to network and collaborate with businesses across the US and internationally last year. In preparation for 2024, I have been working behind the scenes to expand my services by forging a partnership with ADP to aid my clients with their HR and payroll needs. Additionally, I have become a board member for the nonprofit Inflamed Sisters Thriving, Inc. whose purpose is to educate and advocate for the chronically ill community. I’m very excited to lend my expertise and voice to such a worthy cause.
Furthermore, I am making a concerted effort this year to give back to my community by volunteering my services to nonprofits. Currently, I plan to lend a helping hand this tax season to the DFW Alliance of Black Accountants (DFW-ABA) nonprofit that is offering free tax help to the less fortunate through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Not to mention, I am aiming to volunteer my services to nonprofits to financially educate their constituents via workshops or webinars.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Prayer-Patience-Perserverance
The above 3 P’s were crucial on my entrepreneurial journey to not throw in the towel. Entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart. Each one of these qualities are necessary for the peaks and valleys that one will experience on his or her way to long-term success.
My advice for anyone early in their journey is to seek God first. Once you let God lead, He will give you the wisdom and knowledge you need to make the right choices or decisions. Additionally with God in your corner, you will be able to overcome the obstacles and challenges that you will certainly face on the entrepreneurial journey.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client is a small business that is able, willing, and ready to start financially investing in their company. Also, the client needs to be aligned in terms of moral compass and ethics. Having the financial means to pay for my services alone isn’t the primary factor for becoming a client of mine, I want clients who are of good character as well.
