We recently connected with Dr. Sheniqua Johnson and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Sheniqua, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
There was a time in my life when I felt as though I was aimlessly existing. Sure, at the time I was a wife, mother, and Registered Nurse, but these titles didn’t define who I was called to be. I remember one day in particular when my marriage was dissolving right before my eyes and the realization of having to be a single mother of 2 young boys while managing my career became very heavy. I went into my downstairs bathroom and began washing my hands. My downtrodden eyes suddenly looked up and focused on the image staring back at me in the mirror. I did not see my mocha brown skin or my pearly white teeth, all I could see was a grey blob. All of the titles in the world became nonexistent and all I was left with was a purpose-less individual who was broken down by the everyday pressures that many of us face. My light had been snuffed out and I no longer knew why I was here in this world. As the weeks passed me by, thoughts of giving up became my major focus. Finally, the day arrived and I was done! I didn’t want to be in this place anymore. Through tear-stained eyes, a vision of my children’s smiling faces came to my mind. That was the signal I needed to get up and try again. There was no thunderous roar from above, it was only a simple small vision that brought a smile to my otherwise broken heart. My children became my reason to find my purpose in life. From that day on, I pursued the things that brought fulfillment to my heart. Being a mom was not just a title or duty, it was a role that brought fulfillment. I was entrusted with raising up 2 strong men who would add value to the world. Being a Registered Nurse brought fulfillment. It was less about being a job or a career pathway, it became my outlet to manifest my calling in life. I was born to facilitate healing, whether in the physical or in a deeper more spiritual way. I was born to teach others how to live! I am a natural-born encourager. I learned to push the title to the side and find the purpose for every assignment of my life.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
3 important qualities that were the most impactful on my journey:

1. Anchoring to a strong foundation
2. Understanding my faith potential
3. Trusting the process (the good, the not-so-good, and the ugly)

My advice to those who are early in their process towards becoming a better you is exactly the three things that helped me. One, get anchored in a strong foundation. For me that is God and my faith in His divine power and ability. Next, I would suggest that you give yourself a little more credit. Trust your faith potential! This means you don’t have to have it all figured out right at this moment but you eventually will. This means you can start with a mustard-seed-sized amount of faith and as time progresses, it has the potential to evolve to mountain-sized. Lastly, trust the process! Every situation, every trial & tribulation, every setback & every success is working together to build your very specific and individualized journey. Stay committed and focused on becoming the next best version of yourself.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
In 2015, I penned the book titled “I Didn’t Know My On Strength: How My Faith Moved My Mountains”. This book has been pivotal in shaping the trajectory of my life. I wrote this book while going through my divorce. I was not standing on the mountaintop looking back at the situation I had overcome, I penned this book as I was going through. I was literally trusting in my faith potential. I knew that if I just kept going, if I kept getting up every day, and if I kept journeying through despite the divorce, the depression, & the disappointment, I would eventually get to the other side of the mountain. In this book, I described a scenario of options you can take when you are faced with a mountain-sized obstacle. One choice is you can climb it, but imagine how much stamina & endurance that would take. You could crash through it, but think of the strength you would need to tunnel through. The last of the choices is that you could simply tell it to “move”! That’s what I learned to do, I learned to tell those mountain-sized obstacles to move out of my way because I was and still am determined to keep moving, no matter what.
