We recently connected with Shaunette Myers and have shared our conversation below.
Shaunette, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
The majority of my resilience, approximately ninety percent, is derived from my mindset, while the remaining ten percent is attributed to external sources. Narratives of individuals grappling with diverse challenges and opting to surrender are well-known to us, and it is understandable that such decisions are made. However, choosing to relinquish in the face of adversity, while one continues to live, necessitates grappling with the daily reality.
Throughout my life, I have confronted numerous challenges. During these trials, I consistently invoke my internal strength and reflect on my aspirations. Observing others who have successfully navigated similar difficulties serves as a continual reminder that I too can overcome obstacles. Life is inherently fraught with difficulties, and some challenges may seem insurmountable, but it is imperative to repurpose the shattered fragments as fortifications.
Moreover, acknowledging assistance from those who genuinely wish me well has played a pivotal role in bolstering my resilience. Their support serves as a constant reinforcement, reminding me of my inherent capabilities.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three key attributes that have significantly contributed to my professional journey are: a steadfast commitment to continuous learning, the cultivation of discipline, and a mindset of acceptance.
My advice to individuals embarking on their professional journey is to always maintain a proactive attitude towards learning. Regardless of the extent of one’s existing knowledge or acquired qualifications, every new endeavor presents opportunities for growth. Adopting a perpetual student mindset, even as one becomes an expert in a field, fosters ongoing development.
Cultivating discipline is imperative. There will be days when motivation wanes, especially in the face of challenges or unexpected circumstances. However, building and fortifying discipline will serve as a reliable anchor during such moments, ensuring progress even on the most challenging days.
Equally important is the quality of acceptance. Acknowledging that not every aspect of the journey will unfold seamlessly is crucial. Life is inherently imperfect, and understanding and embracing both the successes and setbacks with equanimity are essential for effective navigation. This mindset of acceptance is not a one-time effort but a daily practice that enhances resilience and adaptability in the face of uncertainties.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Experiencing a sense of overwhelm can be daunting. Nevertheless, I have cultivated the ability to strategically reassess situations and seek guidance when necessary. Frequently, when confronted with overwhelming circumstances, individuals may inadvertently intensify their involvement in the sources of stress. Yet, I have come to appreciate and acknowledge the importance of stepping back and soliciting advice as a valid and constructive approach.
