We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Raman Bhardwaj. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Raman below.
Raman, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I would say it is my passion for my art as well as a fear to fail that has given me my resilience. I am a problem solver person and I take up challenges in my stride. Each obstacle or setback makes me think of a solution to beat it and move forward. And my spiritual mindset helps me keep the faith and keep going on.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a commercial artist who creates 2D art in various forms. Most of the work I produce are commissions. I paint large scale murals to decorate interior and exteriors for various organizations and individuals such as Restaurants, Hospitals, Schools, Non profits and City departments. Mural painting fascinate me as I can entertain the masses on a large scale. People from various demographics appreciate and relate to public art and have their own unique experiences. Organizations are able to convery their ideologies among the public through mural art. Besides murals I create commissioned portraits on canvases. I create lot of non-commissioned fine artworks also which are based on my own ideas. These paintings are aimed to be displayed in gallery shows and sold directly to interested buyers which is a secondary stream of income. Thirdly I create commissioned digital illustrations for children books, magazines, websites, corporate print material etc for businesses and individuals. Creating portraits whether human or pets is very exciting job as you capture the exact likeness and details of a person or pet you get a sense of achievement. Illustrations on the other hand are like giving shape to clients’s ideas and creating interesting scenes and characters.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I believe it was my natural talent for drawing that helped me excel in this field. Apart from my basic talent, the things that actually made me confident and excel in my trade were: (1) my speed which came from continuous practice to learn and refine various tools and techniques and (2) Gaining knowledge of different aspects of business and life like language, communication, advertizing, philosophy, psychology and human behaviour which helps an artist to connect and understand the needs of people. I think every artist has their own path and methodology but I would like to suggest those who are early in their journey is to work hard at their skill by practising a lot and comparing their work critically to the best in the field so that they can see their shortcomings and improve themselves. Do some apprenticeship to learn the trade.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful things my parents did for me was allowing me to go to an Art college which gave direction to my life, set the tone for my life, developed my sensibiiities and gave me confidence to pursue this career.
