Hi Lisa, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I discovered my purpose after my childhood friend’s tragic death at twenty-one. This prompted me to live life fully in Melanie’s memory. Despite a love for writing, I struggled to share my craft until co-authoring a novel with my sister Lori. Meeting a film producer opened doors to screenwriting, and my seventeen-year teaching career improved my creative writing skills. Relocating to Atlanta in 2019, I connected with the expanding filmmaking community. I discovered that film festivals had a category for scripts. I entered several festivals around the world and won numerous awards for my screenplays. I expanded my storytelling when I wrote a book about boxing legend Robert W. Lee, showcasing my versatility and commitment to creative exploration. My journey highlights resilience, passion, and the transformative power of loss.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As a filmmaker, my primary passion lies in bringing ideas to life through writing, both for my personal projects and clients. Writing serves as my creative foundation, allowing me to craft compelling narratives that resonate with audiences. Additionally, my role as a film producer brings me satisfaction as I play a pivotal part in bringing projects together, overseeing them from inception to completion. Being a people person, I relish the opportunity to connect with diverse individuals within the filmmaking industry, fostering collaborations that contribute to the success of each project. Currently, I am actively involved as a co-writer and producer on the series “Sharswood,” achieving significant milestones in line with my filmmaker goals. Additionally, co-producing the docuseries “Hit Like a Girl” with IMI INC. is a passion project that brings me immense joy, highlighting the power and resilience of women in a male-dominated sport. Furthermore, my animated series, “Grandma’s Closet,” is a nostalgic reminder of the joy I found as a teacher, allowing me to continue teaching through this creative venture. Excited about the prospects of my future in the film industry, I am driven by these diverse and fulfilling projects.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three key areas of knowledge have profoundly impacted my journey as a filmmaker. Firstly, the ability to collaborate and work seamlessly with others has been instrumental in bringing diverse perspectives and skills to my projects. Secondly, embracing flexibility has allowed me to adapt to the dynamic nature of the film industry, ensuring I can navigate challenges and seize opportunities effectively. Lastly, incorporating compassion into my work has not only strengthened my connections with collaborators but has also added depth and authenticity to the stories I tell. These qualities collectively contribute to the richness of my filmmaking experience. For those new to the industry, developing and improving collaboration skills is crucial. Actively seek opportunities to work with diverse teams, learn from others, and communicate effectively. Embrace flexibility by staying open to new ideas, being adaptable to changes, and constantly learning from experiences.
