We caught up with the brilliant and insightful David Essel a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
David, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Everyone has a purpose in this existence, there’s no one on earth, that isn’t here for specific reasons, and one of the greatest challenges, for all of us is to find out, why we are here?
I was very blessed at a young age to realize that I was born into the role of leadership, And it wasn’t by following my Mom And Dad, it was more of an internal drive to want to be in charge, in control, and to help people reach the highest level of success in life.
This started very very young!
The main way I found my purpose first was through athletics, being a point guard in high school, and then playing for several years at Syracuse University, showed me the need for leadership, showed me the need for the skills that God had given me, this wasn’t something that I had to work really hard on, it was just very natural for me to be a leader.
Since that time, I’ve taken my leadership skills and gifts from the world of sports to about every imaginable human condition that we could think of.
My whole purpose of being here, is simply to help people heal.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My work is extremely diverse, I am a counselor, author of 15 books, master, Life Coach, all faith, minister, radio/TV/podcast host… And the list goes on!
I started out in the world of athletics, and after receiving my masters degree for the next 10 years, I worked exclusively with athletes, bodybuilders, aerobic instructors, personal trainers, with their business with their attitude with their mindset with branding with how to attract clients everything you can imagine.
And then in 1990 everything changed, I received a woman that wanted to do work on relationships, which opened up a whole new avenue of work for me on a daily basis.
Next up, I had struggled with my own addictions for a very long time, so I started working, and helping people get sober from every addiction imaginable.
Even though I have no background in journalism, I started writing books around 1992 and have now written 15 books 6 of them have become number one best sellers.
Everything I do is related around personal growth, formulas for success in all areas of life, and I couldn’t be more thrilled With the role, I’ve been given here on earth.
Our newest book is an incredible unique look at how we can utilize our spirituality, and certain spiritual practices to alleviate mental health issues, to assist in helping to heal relationships to deepen our faith, and to offer more service in this world.
Our limitations are extremely small compared to what the average human being can accomplish in a lifetime, and I want that message to get out to everyone!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The first quality that I think is extremely important for young entrepreneurs, or even individuals that are working at corporations at a very young age, is to find mentors as soon as possible!
It was something I did in the beginning of my career, and it was the smartest move I could’ve ever made.
I surrounded myself with people that were much smarter than me, with much more experience, And who saw the drive in me and wanted to see me become successful in life.
The second quality, is one that seems to be missing in our country today, and that is to do the work! To shatter procrastination, to drop the excuses, and do the work necessary to become the best human being possible.
Now this means you’re probably going to have to do things you don’t want to do, and the most successful people in the world have figured out this equation: when I do what I don’t want to do first thing in the morning, the rest of my day is perfect!
Number three? Always be of service. Dr. Wayne Dyer, in 1990 who was a mentor of mine then, told me never to be afraid to give away my best material, those individuals with high levels of security are not afraid to give away the materials, because they know it’ll come back to them in someway or some form.
I still follow his advice today, and when you go to www.davidessel.com you’ll find five of our books that you can download absolutely free!
This move, giving my products away for free over the years has been a massive help not just to my business, bottom line, but to my feeling of being of more service to the world, and right now we need that!
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
I love this question! Oh, I could tell you 100 books that have radically changed my life, but one of the first ones was “Think and grow rich“, by Napoleon Hill
In 1981 of my mentors, gave me the book as a gift And I was blown away with the wisdom that came out of this individuals. Mind!
As I continued to read the book, over and over again, I noticed in his chapters, he would talk about how he created a “business mastermind group“ of incredibly successful people and entrepreneurs that he would call into his bedroom every morning in his mind, and ask them questions about how he could improve his own business.
He was talking about having people that were no longer alive like Abraham Lincoln , Thomas Edison and more we’re all part of his mastermind group and he would get answers every morning for the challenges he was facing.
Not only did I utilize his practice of creating a “mental mastermind group for my business”, but my latest book was Created around his philosophy, but instead of writing a book on how to create this mastermind group for business I did it for our spiritual life!
“Lessen your burdens and lift your spirits!“, Is a book that came out with a similar program that Napoleon Hill shared in his book, so I’ll have to say that he’s one of my favorite authors for many many reasons.
The world is filled with information to help us achieve our goals, are we willing to go and do the work to create the life we really want?
This is a question we all should answer in writing, to become more focused, more successful, and happier in life.
