Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sean Dillingham. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sean, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
An attitude that was instilled early on in my life of working hard and stick to it. And that is one thing you HAVE to have in this business – stick to it! There is no quit. And you are in the drivers seat in your career. No one is going to do it for you, you have to do it yourself!
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Sean Dillingham, actor and acting teacher. Painfully shy kid, that was put into a school play and found a wonderful release in the performance. From that point on, I was addicted. Theatre, community theatre, semi-professional theatre, tv shows, commercials, movies and everything in between.
I am proud to say I am a working actor.
Currently you can see me on streaming – Netflix (Falling for Christmas, Better call Saul, This is Us) Amazon (15-20 films) and various others (Walker, Brooklyn Nine, Nine, Longmire, Yellowstone, The Night Shift)
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
It’s okay to be you! You dont have to emulate anyone else – the world needs YOU and what you bring to the table. There are lots of roles and they need actors of all types for those roles. Everyone gets fixated on being Brad Pitt, the leading man, that they dont even think of all the other roles and types there are!
My adivce, I wrote a book called “The Book on Acting”. Get it, read it, because it addresses all things acting, even before you start! So you can find out if this is really for you.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My family. My wife and children. It’s not an easy place to be, in the bleachers or stands, cheering for and supporting someone. Winning or losing. But they have been there for me, sometimes, taking a backseat because of my career. So there support and sacrifice has been amazing. And you NEED a good support system!
