We recently connected with Delight Dzansi and have shared our conversation below.
Delight, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Navigating spaces where I am often the only one who looks like me has been a consistent aspect of my journey. While it can be unsettling, I ground myself in my identity, purpose, and aspirations. This mindset isn’t exclusive to my business; it’s a reality that extends into various facets of my life. I’ve learned not to be shocked or intimidated by being in the minority. Instead, I use these moments as opportunities to reinforce my self-awareness, maintain focus on my goals, and remind myself of the resilience that has brought me to where I am. In these situations, I draw strength from the uniqueness I bring to the room and see it as a chance to contribute diverse perspectives to the conversation.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
At alkeBULANPrints, we embark on a journey of cultural storytelling through our handmade modern African styles. What excites us most is the fusion of tradition and modernity in each piece, unraveling the rich narratives of African history and culture. Our creations, from dresses to accessories, are crafted not just as garments but as vessels of heritage. What sets us apart is our commitment to authenticity and empowerment. We source inspiration from the vibrant tapestry of African traditions, creating not just fashion but a connection to our roots.
In the realm of the new, we’re on the verge of establishing a creative hub in Ghana. This space is envisioned not just as a workplace for our artisans but as a beacon for fostering talent, providing a platform for young designers, and contributing to the cultural renaissance of West Africa. Stay tuned as we continue to weave stories, embracing the past, present, and future through the threads of alkeBULANPrints.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, three pivotal elements have been instrumental in shaping my path:
Resilience: The ability to bounce back from setbacks and navigate challenges with determination has been crucial. Embrace the inevitable hurdles as opportunities to learn and grow. Develop resilience by cultivating a positive mindset and viewing obstacles as stepping stones toward success.
Cultural Intelligence: In the realm of fashion deeply rooted in culture, understanding the nuances and histories has been paramount. For those starting, immerse yourself in the cultural aspects of your chosen field. Engage with diverse perspectives, attend events, and actively seek knowledge. This cultural intelligence will not only enrich your work but also foster connections and understanding.
Adaptability: The business landscape is ever-evolving, and the ability to adapt is non-negotiable. Stay abreast of industry trends, technological advancements, and changing consumer preferences. Cultivate a mindset of continuous learning. Be willing to pivot when necessary, turning challenges into opportunities.
My advice for those at the beginning of their journey is to embrace a growth mindset. See each experience as a chance to learn, and every skill acquired as an asset. Network and seek mentorship from those who have walked similar paths. Surround yourself with a supportive community and don’t shy away from seeking guidance. Remember, the journey is as much about the lessons learned as it is about reaching the destination.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Certainly, collaboration is at the heart of alkeBULANPrints’ journey. I’m actively seeking partnerships with various stakeholders, including:
Artisans and Designers: Collaborating with talented individuals who share our passion for promoting African culture through contemporary fashion.
Sustainable Fashion Advocates: Building alliances with those committed to ethical and sustainable practices in the fashion industry.
Influencers: Connecting with individuals who resonate with our brand ethos and can amplify our message to a broader audience.
Community Organizations: Partnering with entities dedicated to empowering marginalized communities, especially in Ghana.
Cultural and Fashion Events: Participating in and contributing to platforms that align with our mission of storytelling through fashion.
If you or your organization fall into any of these categories and see potential for collaboration, please reach out to me through email (admin@thealkebulan.com). Let’s embark on a journey of meaningful collaboration and shared success!
